Staten Island, NY - Wagner College suffered a 28-7 defeat by visiting Monmouth University in Northeast Conference play earlier today at Wagner Stadium. The Seahawks were handed their third straight loss as they fell to 4-3 overall and 0-3 in the NEC. The Hawks moved to 6-1 on the year and 2-1 in the league with the victory.
Monmouth quarterback Brian Boland threw two touchdown passes and ran for another to keep the Seahawks winless in league play.
At the start of the second quarter the Hawks went on top 7-0 on an eight yard pass from Boland to Adam San Miguel. The Hawks managed 5:40 off the clock during the drive covering 79 yards on 11 plays.
The score would remain there until just before halftime when Boland scrambled out of a sack then found Chris Kiley down the left sideline for a 40 yard touchdown and a 14-0 Monmouth lead.
In the second half the Hawks capitalized on a muffed Wagner punt return taking over at the Seahawks 11 yard line. Boland then punched it in himself three plays later from 2 yards out as the margin climbed to 21-0. The rushing score by Boland was the first rushing TD the Wagner defense has given up all season.
The Seahawks tried to answer on the ensuing drive bringing the ball down inside the 10 yard line before an interception by sophomore quarterback Matt Abbey (La Canada, CA / St. Francis) at the goal line killed the possession.
Jason Butler (Syracuse, NY / Henninger) finally put Wagner on the board late in the fourth as the Seahawks avoided being shutout at home for the first time since the 1985 season. The junior back completed a 54 yard six play drive with a 22 yard dash up the middle with 3:14 remaining. He would end the game with 15 carries for 77 yards.
Abbey would finish 15-34 for 140 yards and two interceptions. Senior WR Chris Turner (Syracuse, NY / Henninger) caught five passes for 61 yards while freshman Lon Woods (Tamarac, FL / JP Taravella) had six receptions for 52 yards.
Boland totaled 163 passing yard on 15 for 23, while adding another 20 rushing yards on nine carries. Running back David Sinisi ran for a game high 107 yards on 23 carries and one touchdown.
Defensively junior Bryan Brand (Placerville, CA / Santa Barbara CC) posted a game high 14 tackles for the Seahawks and senior Antonio Pinder (Brooklyn, NY / James Madison) made seven stops, broke up two passes and had one sack.
Wagner returns to action the road the next two weeks starting with a 12:00 pm contest at Central Connecticut St. next Saturday.
