STATEN ISLAND, NY - After dropping the first two games, Wagner fought back to win the third game but it was not enough as the Seahawks fell in the fourth and deciding game, losing to Fairleigh Dickinson by a 3-1 score earlier tonight at the Spiro Sports Center. In the Northeast Conference (NEC) opener for both teams, FDU improves to 13-7 and 1-0 in the NEC while the Seahawks fall to 5-16 and 0-1 in conference play.
The Green & White lost by identical 30-22 scores in the first two games before coming back to win the third game 31-29. The Knights however were too much taking the fourth game 30-19. For the match FDU outhit Wagner .287-.096.
The Knights came out red-hot in the first game, sprinting out to an early 25-12 lead on their way to an easy 30-22 win. FDU hit .406 with 17 kills in the game. FDU also won the second game by a 30-22 count before the Seahawks would come alive.
In the third game, Wagner scored the first seven points and were in control for most of the game. Down 24-18, FDU went on an 8-0 run to go up 26-24 and seemed poised for the sweep. However the Green & White would have none of that as the Seahawks rallied to go on a 7-3 game-ending run, winning 31-29. In the game, sophomore Brandy Barnett (Claremont, CA / St. Lucy's Priory) recorded eight kills, including the game-winning tally, on .467 hitting.
FDU however was just too powerful on this night as they won the fourth game 30-19 to capture their second match against the Seahawks in the last five days.
Barnett led the Wagner attack with 18 kills on a .196 hitting. Sophomore Sirena LaBurn (Port Neches, TX / Port Neches) recorded her second double-double of the year with 10 kills, on .261 hitting, to go along with 11 digs. Freshman Gabi Hilk (Wilmington, DE / Alexis I. DuPont) had 23 assists while senior Lydia Emnott's (Neenah, WI / Neenah) had 20 assists to pace the setting unit. Senior Kerry Krohn (Massapequa, NY / Massapequa) rounded out the double-digit performers for the Seahawks with a match-high 16 digs.
FDU was led by Lauren Boothby, who had a 20 kills on .485 hitting. Rebecca Tenney also had 13 kills on .600 hitting.
The Green & White will not play again until Saturday, October 21 when they head to defending NEC Champion Long Island for an 11:00 am match.
