Seahawks Lose Heartbreaker to CCSU 133-128.5

Jan. 28, 2006

Final Stats

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner Seahawk swim team fell by the slimmest of margins to the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils earlier today at the Spiro Sports Center 133-128.5. Wagner also celebrated senior day recognizing veterans Shannon Johnston (Cherry Hill, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep), Caitlin Graves (Kennett Square, PA/Kennett), and Eileen Dowd (Wethersfield, CT/Wethersfield). Despite all the celebration and five first place finishes it was not enough to overcome the Blue Devils.

The meet started with some foreshadowing of it's close finish in the 200-yard medley relay when Central edged the Seahawks by three 100ths of a second 1:52.69 to 1:52.72. Wagner got things cooking however in the third race, the 200-yard freestyle when Alyssa Montgomery (Yucaipa, CA/Redlands) took second place at 1:57.43 and Molly McDonald (Hickory, NC/Seton Home School) took third at 1:59.99.

Pool records then began to fall left and right starting in the fourth race. Central's Lindsey Snyder dashed to a first place finish in the 100-yard backstroke at 58.55 good for a new Spiro Center mark. It wasn't a record in the next race but it was the first win for Wagner as Dowd led the way in the 100-yard breaststroke at a time of 1:10.74. Freshman Alexandra Tomlinson (Telford, PA/Souderton) and sophomore Jess Radka (Mohnton, PA/Holy Name) took first and second in the next race, the 200-yard butterfly at times of 2:07.83 and 2:08.32. Tomlinson's time was another new top mark at Spiro.

Snyder added another pool record to her ledger in the 200-yard backstroke when she completely blitzed the field by a good 14 seconds to take the win at 2:03.86. Dowd however returned the favor in the next race, the 200-yard breaststroke with another pool record and a first place finish at 2:29.75. After Tomlinson was just edged out of first in the 500-yard freestyle, Radka came back with a win in the 100-yard butterfly and in the process set a pool record at 59.47.

Wagner closed out the meet with a spirited victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay as the team of Montgomery, McDonald, Halley Allen (Bryan,TX/Bryan), and Brigitta Roser (Ithaca, NY/Lansing) notched a win at 3:39.59. The time, fittingly, was another pool record. However it was not enough to change the final outcome.

Wagner is now off for a couple of week as they gear up for the NEC Championships, which begin on February 16, in Landover, Maryland.
