Wagner Volleyball Notches First Win with 3-1 Victory over Delaware St

Sept. 23, 2005 - Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College women's volleyball team notched their first win of the season earlier this afternoon, posting a 3-1 victory over visiting Delaware St. in the Spiro Sports Center. The Seahawks ended a 17 match losing streak dating back to the 2004 season as they improved to 1-8 on the year with scores of 30-22, 27-30, 30-21, and 30-26.

Junior Trish Morris (Queensland, Australia / St. Patrick's College) played her best game of the season recording a double-double with 14 kills and 17 digs for the Seahawks, while classmate Lydia Emnott (Neenah, WI / Neenah) handed out 52 assists for the third 50+ assist game of her career. Junior Anna Mooney (Nashua, NH / Nashua) set a new career high in kills for the second straight game, making 12 to go along with 11 digs for the first double-double of her career.

Game one was all even at 5-5 when a 7-2 run by Wagner gave them a 12-7 lead. The Seahawks would stay in control of the match, extending the advantage to 25-16 before claiming the 30-22 win. Delaware St (1-10) came back for a win in game two to even the match. Wagner held a 12-8 advantage at one point before the Hornets put together a 13-2 stretch for a 21-14 lead. That was followed by an 8-2 Wagner run, leaving the visitors ahead 23-22. Unfortunately that was as close as the Seahawks would get before absorbing the loss.

Wagner went on top 7-3 to start the third game and remained in control all the way through as they took the 30-21 game. The final match of the day was tight throughout, after an early Seahawk rally. Delaware St held a 9-5 lead early on before the Seahawks climbed back in with a 12-4 stretch for a 17-13 advantage. Three straight points by the Hornets then left the match at 17-16 in favor of Wagner. The Seahawks lead would never reach less than one or more than three the remainder of the game until the final point giving the green in white the four point game and match victory.

Junior Kerry Krohn (Massapequa, NY / Massapequa) had double digit digs for the sixth consecutive game as she added 14 on the defense for Wagner, which hit a season best .225 from the field on 56 kills and equaling a season low 20 errors.

The Hornets were paced by Kinga Muszynski with 15 kills and 13 digs and Michael-Anne Gunsten with 14 kills. Three other players reached double figures in digs led by Dawn Alford with 19. As a team they combined to hit .100 from the floor, making 36 errors along with 52 kills.

Wagner returns to action at the UMES Tournament on October 1.
