WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Wagner College Seahawks fell on the road to American University earlier this afternoon 71-58. With the loss Wagner falls to 0-5 on the season while the Eagles improve to 2-4.
The Seahawks never led in the contest falling behind 16-8 by the first media timeout as American guard Tala Hadavi knocked down four three pointers in the game's first 4:04. With the Eagles leading 28-22 with 5:54 remaining in the first half, Wagner went on a 7-2 run to pull within one at 30-29, the closest the game had been since 6-6. American then countered with an 11-2 run to close out the period and make it 41-31 at halftime.
In the second half, American extended its lead to 16 on four occasions only to see the Seahawks come back and make things interesting. With the score 58-42 in American's favor, Wagner went on a 13-5 run over the next 6:25 and to cut the lead to eight at 63-55 with 4:06 to play. The Green and White then stole the ball on the ensuing possession but turned the ball over on a fast-break attempt. After returning from the media timeout, American went on an 8-3 run to close out the game, winning 71-58.
Wagner shot 38.1 percent (24-63) for the game while American hit at a 40.3-percent clip (25-62). The Eagles were 14-24 (58.3 percent) from the line compared to 5-10 (.500) for Wagner. American out-rebounded Wagner 44-39
Senior guard Joy Gallagher (Hazleton, PA / Hazleton) led Wagner in scoring for the second time this season with 19 points. Junior forward Takesha Dye (Boynton Beach, FL / Daytona Beach C.C.) recorded her second double-double of the year with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Sophomore center Ali Ridge (Barrington, IL / Fremd) continued her strong play of late with eight points, eight rebounds and five blocks in a career-best 31 minutes off the bench. Rounding out the top Seahawk performers was freshman guard Casey Stokes (Hummelstown, PA / Lower Dauphin), who had a game-high six assists, three rebounds and two steals.
American was led by Tara Williams' game-high 20 points and Hadavi, who scored 18 points.
The Green & White take a break from their non-conference schedule when they head to Robert Morris for their Northeast Conference (NEC) opener Saturday, Dec. 10 at 7:30 pm.
