STATEN ISLAND, NY - The Wagner College volleyball team dropped their regular season finale 3-1 to Central Connecticut State earlier today at the Spiro Sports Center. Despite the loss, the Seahawks still have a chance to qualify for the Northeast Conference (NEC) tournament. If St. Francis (NY) defeats Sacred Heart later tonight the Seahawks would move on to the NEC Tournament. With the loss the Seahawks are now 6-21 overall and 3-5 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while the Blue Devils improve to 17-7 and 5-3 in the NEC.
Prior to today's game senior Loriann Tunila (Lake Forest, CA / El Toro) was recognized for her outstanding contributions to the program over the last four years.
The Seahawks battled to a 32-30 victory in game one before dropping the next three games by scores of 30-20, 30-8 and 30-22.
In game one, the Blue Devils raced out to an early 18-9 lead and appeared poised to run away with the game. However, the Seahawks went on a 18-5 run to take a 27-23 lead. After extending the lead to 28-25, Central Connecticut State rattled off four straight points to go up 29-28. With their backs to the wall, Tunila tied the score at 29 with a kill. With the Seahawks up 31-30, junior Lydia Emnott (Neenah, WI / Neenah) had a solo block to win game one for the Seahawks 32-30.
With the score tied at 12 in game two, the Blue Devils came to life closing out the game on a 18-8 run, winning 30-10
Game three was all Blue Devils as Central Connecticut State won going away by a score of 30-8.
Down 12-7 in game four, Wagner went on a 13-8 run to tie the score at 20, however the Blue Devils would respond as they would close out the game and the match on a 10-2 run.
The Seahawks were paced by freshman Brandy Barnett (Claremont, CA / St. Lucy's Priory), who had a team-high 13 kills on a .303 hitting percentage and nine digs. Classmate Sirena LaBurn (Port Neches, TX/Port Neches) had a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. Emnott had 29 assists while junior Kerry Krohn (Massapequa, NY / Massapequa) had 15 digs and classmate Trish Morris (Queensland, Australia / St. Pats College) recorded 10 digs, rounding out the Seahawks in double figures. Tunila had four kills and four blocks in her final home game.
Jacqui Jackson's game-high 14 kills and game-high 21 digs paced the Blue Devils' effort.
