Wagner College Director of Athletics
Walt Hameline has announced the hiring of Carter Bartram as the program's second-ever head women's fencing coach.
Bartram brings a plethora fencing experience to Grymes Hill, as both an athlete and coach, following a standout collegiate career at the Dartmouth Fencing Club.
At Dartmouth, where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Physics, Bartram guided the Big Green to the combined six-weapon overall competition at The United States Associate of Collegiate Fencing Clubs (USACFC) National Championships.
"I'm incredibly excited to start coaching at Wagner," said Bartram. "As an avid fencer, I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to keep the sport such a large part of my life, and I hope to see the team continue to grow and succeed."
The Wilmington, DE native also competed at the USA Fencing national championships in 2012 and 2015 while winning the silver at the 2017 Western Cape championship in South Africa.
Specializing in the foil weapon during competition, Bartram can coach all three weapons, having coached at Dartmouth, as well as the Fencing Academy of Philadelphia, where he tutored beginners and advanced fencers alike.
A member of the Fencing Officials' Commission for the Mid-Atlantic Region, Bartram takes over a Seahawk squad that is coming off a successful 2017-18 season.
In just its second year of existence, Wagner sent two student-athletes to the NCAA Mid- Atlantic/South Regional competition in freshmen
Abby Buckborough and
Dove Sinclair, who qualified through their performances throughout the regular season.
Buckborough, Wagner's leading fencer on the season, placed 24th in the regionals while Sinclair checked in with a 32nd-place finish. After delivering an early-season ninth-place effort at the Penn State Open,Buckborough turned in a dominant performance at the LIU Post Invitational, winning 17 out of 18 bouts on the day, in the Seahawks to a win over Yeshiva.
Sinclair, meanwhile, provided Wagner with additional firepower in the sabre weapon, finishing second on the team in victories during the season. Her best finish of the season came at the NIWFA Christmas Invite, hosted by Drew University, where the first-year Seahawk placed 20th overall.
Apart from his coaching duties, Bartram will be pursuing a Master's Degree in Business of Administration at Wagner.
