Somerset, NJ – In the final weekend of competition before this weekend's Northeast Conference (NEC) Championship, sophomore
Lucas Moreno (Bogota, Colombia / Gimnasio Campestre) turned in the best performance of his career and was rewarded by being named NEC Men's Golfer of the Week, the league office announced today.
At last week's Navy Spring Invitational, Moreno delivered a second-place performance after shooting a one-over par 143 at the two-round event. The 2016 NEC Rookie of the Year and Second-Team All-League performer shot an even par 71 in Saturday's opening round, giving him a one-stroke overnight lead.
He then fired a one-over 72 over the next 18 holes on Sunday, and was in the lead much of the day, before being overtaken by late-charging Kyle Hart of George Mason who shot a two-under 69 to edge Moreno by one stroke.
Moreno's efforts helped the Seahawks to a fifth-place finish in the 11-team field.
In earning the first NEC weekly award of his young career, Moreno becomes the second Seahawk to earn a weekly honor this season as senior
Anton Frondelius (Munkedal, Sweden / The Gunnery) was named the
NEC Co-Player of the Week on April 5 following his first-place finish at the Coca-Cola Lehigh Valley Invitational.
