Joseph Ferraro (Newport Beach, CA/Newport Harbor) was named Mid Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) Defensive Player of the Week, while junior utility
Ciaran Wolohan (Manly, Australia/St. Aloysius College/Golden West College) and freshman driver
Matthew Miller (san Ramon, CA/California High) were named to the Player and Rookie of the Week Honor Rolls, respectively.
This marks the second time in three weeks that Ferraro has been named Defensive Player of the Week by the
Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA). The rookie goalie registered ten saves in Wagner's 11-10 victory over local rival Fordham University, including a paramount save with ten seconds left in the opening quarter to keep the Seahawks within one goal before sparking a 3-0 run to take the lead.
The California native cashed in another stellar performance with nine saves in the Green & White's 6-5 come-from-behind victory over Iona College. Spearheaded by Ferraro, the Seahawks held Iona scoreless in the second half after trailing the Gaels 5-3 at intermission.
The two-time Defensive Player of the Week also recorded ten blocks and seven blocks in Wagner's losses to Harvard and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, respectively as the Seahawks finished out their week of competition 2-2.
Junior utility
Ciaran Wolohan landed himself on the MAWPC Player of the Week Honor Roll for the third time this season after netting a team-high five goals against Fordham. The Golden West transfer recorded a hat-trick less than one minute into the second stanza, igniting a 3-0 run for the Seahawks, who took a 6-4 lead over the Rams. Wolohan went on to score six more goals in the Harvard Invitational including a team-high three goals in Wagner's 13-10 loss to MIT.
The Seahawks earned their third weekly honor landing freshman driver
Matthew Miller on the MAWPC Rookie of the Week Honor Roll. Miller drained four tallies in a breakout performance against Iona. The rookie fired back-to-back goals in the in the opening quarter to decrease Iona's lead to 3-2. He later scored two consecutive markers early in the final stanza to record Wagner's fifth and sixths goals of the contest. Miller also registered a key assist to Wolohan in the third quarter against Fordham to put the Green & White ahead 9-8.
Ferraro, Wolohan, Miller and the rest of the Seahawks return to action on the west coast for the Santa Clara Rodeo from October 22-23. Wagner will face host team, Santa Saturday at 11:40 am (PST).
