Shea Gegan (Mansquan, NJ/Manasquan) and freshman
Olivia Streilein (Medford, NJ/Lenape) were named the league's Defensive Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively.
Following yesterday's 10-9 come-from-behind win at Sacred Heart, Wagner is 3-1 in the NEC and shares second-place honors with Robert Morris, one game behind 4-0 Bryant. The top four teams will compete in the
2014 NEC Women Lacrosse Championships that will take place during the first weekend of May. The Green & White also moved over the .500 mark overall and now stand at 7-6 on the season.
Wagner's current three-game NEC winning streak is the longest in nine years. The last time the Seahawks won three straight league games was in 2005 when the Green & White knocked off Mount St. Mary's, Central Connecticut and LIU Brooklyn en route to making the their last NEC Tournament appearance.
Gegan, who is now Wagner's all-time career leader with 87 caused turnovers, accomplished in less than two seasons, had three caused turnovers and two ground balls while recording a career-high seven points (4 goals, 3 assists) in leading the Green & White to a 19-11 win over LIU Brooklyn on April 11.
The 5-10 Gegan followed that effort with five caused turnovers, six draw controls, two ground balls and an assist in yesterday's 10-9 comeback win at Sacred Heart. In the process, Gegan also maintained her hold on the No. 1 ranking, among all Division I women's lacrosse players, with 3.46 caused turnovers per game while her average of 3.23 ground balls per game ranks No. 2 nationally. Led by Gegan, the Seahawks, as a team, are ranked No. 1 nationally in caused turnovers per game (13.69) and No. 5 in ground balls per outing at 0.46.
Streilein posted the clutch game-winning goal with just 2:12 left on the clock in the 10-9 win at Sacred Heart, in addition to recording two critical caused turnovers, as well as two ground balls vs. the Pioneers. Two days earlier, the South Jersey product tallied a goal and two caused turnovers in the Seahawks 19-11 victory at LIU Brooklyn. In Wagner's 2-0 week, Streilein totaled three goals, two caused turnovers, two draw controls and two ground balls. The Seahawks have now copped three weekly awards this season. On March 24, sophomore goalie Katie Ferraro (Ownings Mill, MD/McDonogh), was named the NEC Defensive Player of the Week after recording a career-high 23 saves at Jacksonville (March 19). For the season, Ferraro ranks 4th in the nation, among 100 goalies, with a save percentage of .503. Gegan is the Seahawk team-leader in goals (22), assists (13), points (35), caused turnovers (44) and aground balls (42). Sophomore Stephanie Peterson (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township) is second on the team with 28 points (23 goals, 5 assists), while Streilein and sophomore Kimmy Tumolo (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview) are tied for third with 22 points each. Streilein's 22 points are a function of 19 goals and three assists while Streilein has 15 goals and seven assists. Wagner has three other players who have achieved double figures in points in sophomore Gretchen Fay (Spring Lake Heights, NJ/Manasquan), who has 18 points, followed by junior Jessica Mills (Vernon Township,, NJ/Vernon) and senior Michela Galante (Maplewood, NJ/Maplewood) who check in have scored 17 and 10 points, respectively. Among NEC teams, Wagner ranks No. 1 in ground balls per game (20.46), caused turnovers per game (13.6), save percentage (.468), and shots on goal per game (21.69). Individually, Gegan is No. 1 in the NEC in caused turnovers per game (3.38), ground balls per game (3.23), is third in free-position goals per game (0.69) and tied for fourth in assists per game (1.00). Ferraro tops the NEC in both goals against average (8.71) and save percentage (.503) while Peterson's three game-winning goals (3) are tied for second in the conference. Wagner is next in action on Friday, April 18 when the Seahawks play their final home game of the season, hosting Mount St. Mary's in a 3:00 pm matchup. The Green & White then close out the regular season with a two-game Western Pennsylvania swing, playing at Robert Morris on April 25 at 3:00 pm before traveling to Saint Francis U on April 27 at 1:00 pm.
