Brooklyn, NY – Sophomore
Gretchen Fay (Spring Lake Heights, NJ/Manasquan) scored five goals and sophomore
Shea Gegan (Manasquan, NJ/Manasquan) tallied four goals and added three assists to power the Wagner women's lacrosse team to a 19-11 Northeast Conference (NEC) victory at LIU Brooklyn this afternoon.
With the victory, the Seahawks even their season record at 6-6 while improving to 2-1 in the NEC while LIU falls to 2-10 overall, 0-3 in league play.
By halftime, Fay has already recorded a hat trick and Wagner was in control with a 9-5 lead.
After the Blackbirds drew to within 9-6 at the outset of the second half on a Jesenia Cantres goal, consecutive goals by Fay and sophomore
Stephanie Peterson (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township) pushed the Seahawk lead to 11-6 with 25:40 left.
Colleen Holmes then drew LIU back to within four at 11-7 with a goal at the 25:10 mark. This is as close as the Blackbirds would get, however, as a Peterson tally at 24:31 kick-started a 6-0 Wagner run that built the lead to a commanding 17-7 Seahawk advantage.
Wagner, which was a perfect 15-of-15 on clears, out-shot LIU 40-26 and led in ground balls by a 10-8 count, while the Blackbirds held an 18-14 edge in draw controls.
Adding two goals each for the Seahawks were
Taylor Pastore (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker), and junior
Jessica Mills (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township). Notching one goal apiece for Wagner was freshman
Olivia Streilein (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape), junior Chantel Agnew (Poolesville, MD/Poolesville), senior

Tori McGrath (Albany, NY/Bethlehem Central).
