Pictured Above: Senior goalkeeper Katie Marcy (Photo by Dave Saffran)Teaneck, NJ – The second-seeded Wagner women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought Northeast Conference (NEC) Championship Semifinal match vs. No. 3 seed Central Connecticut by a 2-1 count in double overtime this afternoon.
In today's first semifinal match, No. 1 seed and host
Fairleigh Dickinson posted a 3-1 victory over fourth-seeded Saint Francis U. FDU and Central Connecticut will meet in the 2014 NEC Championship Match at 1:00 pm on the Fairleigh Dickinson campus with the winner gaining automatic entry into the
2014 NCAA Division I Championship.
Central Connecticut took an early advantage when NEC Player of the Year Tori Sousa found the back of the net in the 25th minute of the match. The Blue Devils controlled the majority of the half and entered the break holding onto the one-goal lead.
As play resumed for the second half, the Seahawks came out with a fiery passion as they rallied to even the match at a goal apiece when junior midfielder
Johanna Konrad (Volkach, Germany / LSH) headed the ball to the back of the net after junior defender
Victoria Roda (Staten Island, NY / Petrides (Saint Leo's) pushed the ball down the left side of the field and sent a perfectly-crossed ball to Konrad.
The end of regulation saw both sides battling for control of ball to score the crucial go ahead goal, but it never came to fruition as the teams headed to overtime with the score deadlocked at 1-1.
The first overtime session saw both teams have scoring chances but goals were hard to come by as both goalkeepers and their respective defenses kept the score knotted. Sophomore defender
Tori Rodriguez (Mission Viejo, CA / Capistrano Valley) came up with a huge block in the second overtime to prevent Sousa from scoring in the 104th minute. Two minutes later though, Sousa tracked down a deflected loose ball and tapped home the the game-winning goal.
Fifth-year senior goalkeeper
Katie Marcy (Bellmore, NY / John F. Kennedy) recorded four saves in the final game of her collegiate career for the Seahwks.
The loss ends a landmark season for the Green & White's as the Seahawks close the 2014 campaign with an overall record of 9-7-3. Wagner went 5-2-2 in league play, which is the finest conference mark ever for the Seahawks, and qualified for their first NEC Championship since 1997, while earning several individual conference awards, highlighted by eight-year
