Somerset, NJ – Wagner College freshman point guard
Jacqui Thompson (Southampton, PA/ St. Basil Academy) put both her scoring and passing abilities on display during the Seahawks' two games last week and for her efforts has been named the
Choice Hotels Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week.
One of the jewels in Wagner's five-person recruiting class, Thompson averaged 8.5 points and 6.5 assists over a pair of games against Columbia on November 16 and at NJIT on November 19. The 5-foot-3 Thompson went for 15 points, dished out four assists, and made two steals to help carry the Seahawks to a 66-54 victory over Ivy League member Columbia.
After shooting 5-of-7 from the floor against Columbia, the hustling, hard-working rookie spent most of her time creating easy buckets for others during Wagner's 68-65 setback at NJIT. The rookie scored only two points, but was credited with nine assists, the most by a Seahawk since Feb. 7, 2009 when Andrea Reed handed out nine vs. Saint Francis (PA). Thompson 15 assists over three games this season leads all NEC freshmen.
Thompson is the first Seahawk to cop NEC Rookie of the Week honors since
Marie-Laurence Archambault on January 18, 2010.
The 1-2 Seahawks are next in action on Tuesday, November 22 when they travel to BIG EAST member St. John's in a 6:00 pm start. The Wagner-St. John's game can be seen on ESPN3 by clicking
