Freddy Sabido was named the Northeast Conference (NEC) Baseball Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
For Sabido, this marks the first time that the towering Staten Island native has garnered Player of the Week honors while marking the third time in his career that he has earned a league citation, as he was named NEC Rookie of the Week on two occasions a season ago (May 8 & May 22).
Additionally, the local product is the third Seahawk this season to capture the Player of the Week award, joining senior outfielder
Anthony Godino,
who garnered the accolade on March 19, and junior catcher
Phil Capra,
who was named Co-Player of the Week back on March 12.
Sabido was a hits machine during Wagner's three-game series sweep of Sacred Heart this past weekend. For the week, which included a 1-for-4 performance at St. John's, Sabido batted .600 (12-for-20) with four extra-bases hits and six RBI.
The Pioneers' pitching staff had a hard time retiring the 6'7" lefty-hitting Sabido, who clubbed a .688 batting average over the three-game set, going 11-for-16 while connecting on three doubles and a triple. Sabido posted a team-high 1.667 OPS (on-base + slugging percentages), highlighted by a slugging percentage of 1.000.
The former Susan E. Wagner standout had six RBIs while also scoring two of the combined 37 runs over the SHU series. In the series opener on March 29, Sabido produced his seventh multi-hit game of the season, going 4-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored, as Wagner defeated the Pioneers, 14-3.
In game two on Friday, a 9-4 win for the Seahawks, the towering slugger added three more hits in five at-bats. Wrapping up play in the series finale on Saturday afternoon, Sabido again led the way at the plate, going 4-for-6, with four RBIs as the Green & White needed extra innings to secure a 14-7 victory over Sacred Heart.
