Boston, MA – The Wagner women's water polo team finished day two of the Harvard Invitational 1-1. After losing 6-5 to No. 13 Indiana University, the Green & White rallied past No. 21 Harvard 4-3 in the weekend finale.
Wagner 4, Harvard 3
The Seahawks rallied from a two point deficit to defeat No. 19 Harvard 4-3 with freshman center
Millie Pullyblank (Victoria, Australia / Haileybury Girls College) netting the come-from-behind goal.
Offensive force
Erica Hardy (Montreal, Quebec / St. Thomas) put the Green & White on the board first taking advantage of a man-up opportunity after Harvard's Sami Strutner was called for an exclusion. The Crimson responded with two tallies to end the first quarter ahead 2-1.
Harvard's goalkeeper Cleo Harrington held the Seahawks scoreless in the second quarter before senior goalkeeper
Emily Riddle (Edmonton, Alberta / Dr. E.P. Scarlett), who registered eight saves, held the Crimson scoreless in the third. Once again, Wagner took advantage of a power play cashing in with 1:08 remaining in the stanza. Hardy dished out her second point of the game to freshman
Jacqui Sjogren (Queensland, Australia / St. Andrews Anglican College) as the Seahawks trailed 3-2 entering the final eight minutes.
The Green & White outscored Harvard 2-0 in the final quarter behind back-to-back markers from junior attack
Lacey Anderson (Thousand Oaks, CA / Westlake) and Pullyblank to upset No. 21 Harvard 4-3.
Wagner 5, Indiana 6
After losing to Indiana 10-2 on February 4, the Seahawks were defeated by the No. 13 Hoosiers by just one point in a hard fought matchup at Blodgett Pool.
The two nationally ranked programs were held scoreless for the first seven and a half minutes of the contest before Indiana scored the lone goal of the quarter with 1:34 remaining to take an early 1-0 lead.
Junior attack
Elise Begg (Newbury Park, CA / Newbury) and sophomore attack
Erica Hardy teamed up on a power play opportunity to score Wagner's first goal early in the second stanza. The remainder of the quarter was a back-and-forth affair with Hardy rattling the cage for the Seahawks once again as they entered intermission trailing 3-2.
Each team scored once more in the third with the Green & White's lone marker coming from Hardy as she completed her second hat trick of the weekend.
Indiana extended its lead 6-3 early in the final period before the Seahawks netted two late tallies to end the contest. Despite its late offensive surge and eight blocks from senior goalkeeper
Emily Riddle, the Green & White was handed its eighth loss of the season.
Wagner is back in action March 11-12 with a four-game stint on the West Coast as part of San Diego State's Aztec Invitational.
