Annapolis, MD - The fourth-seeded Wagner men's water polo team fell 8-5 to No. 2-seeded George Washington in its first-ever appearance in the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference Tournament (MAWPC) championship game on Sunday afternoon. The Seahawks' run to the MAWPC title game, in just the second year of the program's existence, was recognized when
Chris Radmonovich took home Coach of the Tournament honors.
After defeating Fordham University in overtime victory in Saturday's semifinal, the Colonials claim the MAWPC Championship title.
George Washington got off to an early 5-0 lead in the first period, before First-Team All-Conference selection
Jasmin Kolasinac was able to find the back of the net with back-to-back goals and put the Seahawks on the board and make the score 5-2.
Just before the conclusion of the first half, Kolasinac registered his third goal, while freshman driver
Jordi Alonso found the back of the net with five seconds remaining in the second stanza to cut the Colonial lead to 6-4.
George Washington tallied the first goal of the third period to extend the lead to three before Alonso netted his second of the day, making the score 7-5. The score would remain this way for the majority of the fourth and final period until George Washington registered its final goal and secured the win and the MAWPC Championship title, as well as an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament with a final score of 8-5.
Cameron Woldt held tough in the cage, totaling six saves for the Green & White.
At the conclusion of the tournament, four Seahawks earned All-Tournament team awards, while Wagner head coach
Chris Radmonovich was named the Coach of the Tournament, helping his team to its first-ever championship appearance in program history. Cameron Woldt and
Ciaran Wolohan were named to the 2017 All-Tournament First-Team, while Jasmin Kolasinac and
Teo Dadic were named All-Tournament Second-Team.
This concludes the 2017 season for Wagner, as the Seahawks finish second in the MAWPC with a 14-17 record on the season.
