Emmitsburg, MD – Behind hat tricks from junior midfielder Gretchen Fay (Spring Lake Heights, NJ/Manasquan) and junior attack Stephanie Peterson (Vernon Township, NJ/Vernon), and four assists from junior midfielder Shea Gegan (Belmar, NJ/Mansquan), the Wagner women's lacrosse team ran past Mount St. Mary's 13-7 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) opener for both teams this afternoon.

In winning their second straight game, which came on the heels of Tuesday's 22-3 vanquishing of Delaware State, the Seahawks improve to 4-7 overall and 1-0 in league play, while the Mountaineers fall to 1-9 on the season and 0-1 in the NEC.

Fay, Peterson and sophomore attack Olivia Streilein (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) scored two goals apiece in the first half as the Green & White galloped out to a 9-4 lead at the intermission. Streilein scored twice during Wagner's game-opening 6-0 run, with both goals coming off of assists from Gegan.

Peterson's first goal of the game, an unassisted tally at the 10:35 mark of the opening half, capped the Seahawks' 6-0 scoring spree. Kelly Maloney put the Mount on the board with a man-up goal 17 seconds later before Fay sank a free-position shot with 9:18 left in the half to make it a 7-1 game. Sammie Knapp then notched a pair of goals within a 28-second span to draw the Mount to within 7-3 with 8:13 remaining before halftime.

Fay's second goal, off a feed from junior midfielder Taylor Pastore (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker), kick-started a 2-1 Seahawk burst that made it a 9-4 game at the half.

The Mount struck quickly following intermission on a Nicole Lantuh unassisted score just 26 seconds into the half, drawing the Mountaineers to within four goals again at 9-5. This is as close as Mount St. Mary's would get, however, as Wagner answered with a 3-0 run on goals by Fay, Pastore and Peterson, the latter coming with 8:18 left, which ballooned the Wagner lead to 12-5.

Pastore and Streilein each contributed three points (2G, 1A apiece) to the Seahawk offensive onslaught, while junior attack Tori McGrath (Albany, NY/Bethlehem Central), senior midfielder Jessica Mills (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township), and junior attack Kimmy Tumolo (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview) supplied one goal apiece for Wagner as seven different Seahawks ticked the twine on the afternoon. Freshman midfielder Lauren Ednie (Verona, NJ/Verona) also found her way into the scoring column with an assist.

In addition to her game-high four assists, Gegan, the nation's leader in caused turnovers (CT) per game, added a game-high four CTs, while tying for game-high honors with four draw controls and three ground balls.

Maloney led the Mount with three goals while Knapp finished with two. Steph Rurkowski went the whole way between the pipes for the Mountaineers. Facing 22 shots on goal, Rurkowski was credited with nine saves.

Seahawk junior goalie Katie Ferraro (Owings Mill, MD/McDonogh) registered six saves in making a triumphant return to her home state. The staunch Seahawk defense forced the Mount into committing 17 turnovers while limiting the Mountaineers to just 16 shots. Wagner, which unleashed 28 shots on the day, held a 20-14 edge in ground balls and won 12-of-22 draw controls.

The Seahawks were successful on 2-of-7 free-position shots and were masterful in defending Mount's free-position shots as the Mountaineers were 0-of-6 in their FPS tries.

The Green & White will be looking for a 2-0 NEC start when they kick off a four-game home stretch on Friday, April 10 by hosting Robert Morris, the team that Seahawks defeated in a 2014 NEC Tournament semifinal matchup, en route to their first-ever appearance in the league title game. The Wagner-RMU contest is set for 1:00 p.m.
