Jasmine Nwajei (Rockaway Park, NY/Murry Bergtraum), in posting a 66-60 win over Robert Morris in a game that was seen live on ESPN3.com.
The Seahawks, who narrowly missed qualifying for their second straight Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament, finish the season with an overall record of 7-22 and a league mark of 5-13. The Colonials, who were hoping to cop the No. 1 seed in the conference tourney with a win, instead fall to 13-5 in the NEC, which gives the Colonials the No. 3 seed. RMU is 15-13 overall on the season.
The Seahawks' victory snapped a 17-game home NEC winning streak for Robert Morris dating back to 2013.
Junior guard
Jordyn Peck (Shaker Heights, OH/Shaker Heights) scored nine of her 12 points in the second half to help the Wagner comeback, while explosive freshman guard
Tanasia Russell (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) continued her fine form off the bench, hitting for all 10 of her points in the second half.
The Colonials built a 34-21 halftime lead with Smith leading the way with 10 while Stamolamprou added eight. Nwajei tallied 14 first-half points for the Seahawks. The Seahawks were undone by cold shooting in the opening half as Wagner connected on just 29% (8-of-28) from the floor while RMU was at 48% (11-of-23) shooting in the first half.
The second half was an entirely different story as Wagner outscored RMU 45-26 over the final 20 minutes in registering the thrilling come-from-behind win.
Wagner, which trailed for the opening 30 minutes of the game, used a 31-11 scoring advantage in the game's final 13 minutes to pull away for the win. While the Seahawks were shooting 9-of-17 during this stretch, on the defensive end, Wagner was holding RMU to just 6-of-22 shooting .
Trailing by 11 with 13:51 left in the second half, a Nwajei lay-up kick-started an 18-2 surge by the Seahawks. The 5-8 New York City guard scored eight of her game-high 28 points over the next five minutes while Russell chipped in eight of her own. The lone RMU bucket was a back door cut and lay-up by Anna Niki Stamolamprou off a feed from
Ashley Ravelli. Wagner answered that with 12 consecutive points to take a 53-48 lead with 8:48 to play.
