Defense Steps Up In Sun-Splashed Green & White Game

Staten Island, NY – The large throng of Seahawk  fans who turned out to enjoy the picture perfect weather were treated to a close-up view of familiar veterans blending with promising newcomers as the Wagner College football program culminated spring practice with the annual Green & White Game held at Wagner College Stadium.

The white-clad players were on defense while the offense was adorned in green jerseys. On this day, it was the defense which held the upper hand. Using a scoring system that rewarded the defense with six points for a turnover, three points per sack, two points per tackle for loss and one point for every three and out, the White (defense) emerged with a 50-34 victory over the Green (offense).

Among the many individuals who spearheaded the fine defensive performance effort delivered by the White Team was junior safety Sidiq Soulemana (Bronx, NY/ DeWitt Clinton), a converted linebacker. Others who made their share of outstanding plays in the defensive backfield were sophomores Nevon Williams (Teaneck, NJ/ Teaneck), who had the game's lone interception, and Blake Bascom (Monroe Township, NJ/ Monroe). Redshirt freshman Shan Berry (Orlando, FL/ University) had had several pass breakups as did junior Sam McKinnon (Miami, FL/ Miami Southridge).

At the linebacker position, junior Jacob Meier (Merrick, NY/ Calhoun), seniors Mike Milone (Ho Ho Kus, NJ/ Northern Highlands) and Theodore Clohessy (Staten Island,NY, St. Joseph's By the Sea), along with redshirt freshman Cody Kelso (East Aurora, NY/ East Aurora) were among those who were particularly active.

Up front, junior defensive lineman Davon Johnson (Baltimore, MD/ ASA Institute), a mid-year transfer who enrolled prior to the spring semester, came up with two sacks while senior Adams Issaka (Port Reading, NJ/ Woodbridge) and sophomore Yamir Ortiz (Riverdale, NJ/ Pascack Valley) were among the many defensive linemen who made their presence felt.

“First off, we had a great turnout and we had a great day with the sun shining and the whole deal. As for the game, I think overall we got a good look at all of our players,” said Walt Hameline who will enter his 32nd season as Wagner head coach this fall with a record of 204-122-2 (.624).

“Overall, I think the defense probably had a little bit of the edge. On both sides of the ball, we have some kids missing but I think we'll get a good look at this film, evaluate and then take our next step. The kids are finishing up exams and then we have our summer weight and fitness program. This was a good day for our team and an important day for our coaches, no question about it.”

Offensively, the Green team rotated four different quarterbacks throughout the afternoon. Junior Kramer Berg (Plymouth, MN/ Rochester Community Technical School), a highly-touted mid-year transfer who passed for more than 2,000 yards last season, completed 8-of-12 passes for 75 yards. The t highlight of Berg's afternoon was a 5-yard touchdown strike to redshirt freshman wide receiver John Vincent (San Mateo, CA / Juniperro Serra).

Mobile left-handed signal-caller Chris Andrews (Queens, NY/ Valley Forge Military Academy) threw the other touchdown on the day, hitting sophomore fullback Patrick Gibbons (Carthage, NY/ Milford Academy) on a four-yard score. Sophomore Marshyl Rothman (Jupiter, FL/ Jupiter Christian), another elusive, scrambling-type quarterback, completed 6-of-10 passes for 24 yards and one interception while rushing for 13 yards on three carries. #Sophomore Matt Misley# (Park Ridge, NJ/ Park Ridge), who saw action in seven games last season with one start, connected on 5-of-7 attempts for 29 yards.

In the receiving department, sophomore wide receiver Anthony Carrington (Toms River, NJ/ Toms River North), displayed soft hands and a smooth gait in snaring a game-high five receptions for 39 yards. Vincent had four catches for 46 yards, senior wide receiver Cody Morgan (Boston, MA/ Boston College HS) caught three passes for 21 yards, sophomore tight end Bryant Watts (Burlington, NJ/ Florence), a big target at 6-5, 250,  had three grabs for 20 yards.

Sophomore wide receiver Mike Weber (East Brunswick, NJ/ East Brunswick) had two receptions for 22 yards. Catching one pass apiece were senior wide receiver Justin Sciarra (La Canada, CA/ St. Francis Prep), redshirt freshman wide receiver Caylin McBeth (Miami, FL/ American) and sophomore running back Otis Wright (Fort Lauderdale, FL/ Dillard).

The White team did a solid job all game bottling up the Green team's running game. The leading rusher on the day was redshirt freshman Ralph Greene (Tigard, OR/ Tigard) who gained a hard-fought 24 yards on eight carries. Redshirt freshman running back Deangelo James (Hialeah, FL/ American Senior) managed 18 yards on six carries, senior running back Kenny Howard (Plainfield, NJ/ Nassau CC) gained 14 yards on two carries while redshirt freshman fullback Josh Firkser rushed for 13 yards on three attempts.

Among the veterans who were on the sidelines for the Green & White game were senior quarterback Nick Doscher (Staten Island, NY/ Moore Catholic), junior running back Dominique Williams (Bridgeton, NJ/ Bridgeton), senior wide receiver Wandy Saintilien (Miami, FL/ ASA Institute), junior tight end Joe Sidaras (Mastic Beach, NY/ William Floyd), junior kicker David Lopez (Plantation, FL/ American Heritage), senior linebacker Mike Lombardo (Jupiter, FL/ Jupiter Christian) and junior defensive back #Patrick  O'Connor# (Leominster, MA/ Leominster).

The Seahawks will begin the 2012 season with a pair of road games, traveling to FBS member Florida Atlantic on August 31 and to Georgetown on September 8. Wagner's home opener on September 15 vs. Monmouth promises to be a special affair as the1987 team, which captured the Division III National Championship, will be honored that day on the 25-year anniversary of this crowning achievement.
