Malik Hall Returns To Wagner Football As Defensive Coordinator

Staten Island, NY - Malik Hall, who was Wagner College's Defensive Coordinator in 2010 before serving as Defensive Line coach at UMass last season, will reassume his duties as the Seahawks' Defense Coordinator in 2012, Director of Athletics/Head Football Coach Walt Hameline has announced.

“We're thrilled to welcome Malik back,” said Hameline. “Malik did a terrific job for us during his one year here and I am confident he will direct an aggressive, disciplined defense. Malik coaches with a great deal of passion which he is able to transmit to the players who are under his guidance. His enthusiasm and energy are contagious and, I believe, will have a positive impact on our student-athletes. ”

While coaching Wagner in 2010, Hall led the Seahawks to a No. 17 ranking among FCS teams in total defense. The Seahawks were also among the NEC's best in several major statistical categories, finishing second in total defense (321.4 yards) scoring defense (23.0 ppg.) and sacks (23), and third in pass defense (178.8 ypg.), and rushing defense (142.5 ypg.).

Hall's defense earned its share of accolades following the season when four members of the 2010 Seahawk defense were All-Northeast Conference (NEC) honors. In 2012, Hall will have the opportunity to coach alongside one of those former All-NEC performers in Stefen Gage, an All-NEC First-Team honoree in 2010 who is entering his second seasons as secondary coach for the Green & White. In 2010, Hall also coached a trio of defensive stalwarts who were named to the 2010 All-NEC Second Team in defensive end Mike Cox, defensive back Frantz Placide and linebacker Julian Stanford.

“This is a great opportunity for me to return to Wagner and recreate what I started two seasons ago,” said the 31-year old Hall. “There is so much youth and excitement within the program, I can't wait to start get after it. I thank Walt Hameline for providing me with this opportunity as it speaks to the relationship that we have and to his belief in me.”

In addition to his time at UMass, Hall served as an assistant on the staffs at Fordham, Hofstra, and Central Connecticut. In 2006 and 2009, the Detroit, MI, native served as the Defensive Line coach and Special Teams Coordinator at Fordham. During the 2006 season, helped develop a I-AA All-America selection and two All-Patriot League picks.

From 2007-08, he coached the defensive line at Hofstra while also serving as the program's NFL Liaison.  At Hofstra in 2008, Hall was part of the top-rated passing defense in the Colonial Athletic Conference (CAA). In 2007, Hofstra ranked first in the CAA and 11th in the FCS in rushing defense and second in the conference and 15th in the nation in total defense.

Throughout  his coaching career, he has recruited up and down the Eastern Seaboard as well as in the Midwest (Michigan, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin).

As a collegiate player, Hall helped led UMass to the Atlantic 10 Championship title game as a senior in 2003 when he posted 46 tackles, five for loss, and two sacks. He transferred to UMass in the Spring of 2002 after playing Vermillion Community College in Ely, Minn. He graduated in December 2003 from UMass with a degree in sociology and education.
