Lisa Cermignano Show - Presented By Shoprite (hosted by Miles McQuiggan)
Staten Island, NY – The Wagner women's basketball team capped a busy week by unveiling seniors
Marie-Laurence Archambault (Montreal. Quebec/ Montmorency),
Chanez Robinson (Newark, NJ/ Shabazz/ Northeastern) and
Veronick Fournier (Gatineau, Quebec/ Montmorency) as tri-captains for the 2012-2013 season.
On Tuesday, the women's team boarded the Staten Island Ferry for a
publicity shoot which took place in lower Manhattan as well as on board the Ferry, with both the Verrazano Bridge and Statue of Liberty serving as backdrops. On Friday night, the Seahawks took part in a three-point shooting contest along with the men's team as part of the
Madness Before Midnight festivities at the Spiro Center.
While Midnight Before Madness was fun, and the trip into the Big Apple was exciting, the naming of captains, among the three, is what will have largest impact in determining the level of success Wagner will experience this season. First-year head coach
Lisa Cermignano was succinct and to the point in describing her reasoning for tabbing Archambault, Robinson and Fouurnier as tri-captains.
“The thing about Chanez, Marie and Veronick is they get it. They've done it the best, they've done it the longest,” said Cermignano. “They bring incredible energy and all three complement each other on and off the court. The thing about being a captain is it's about a lot more than just leading in practice and games.”
Archambault is the team's leading returning scorer (7.9 ppg.) whose name is climbing up the record book in several categories. As she enters her senior season, the 6-0 forward is ranked fourth on the Wagner all-time list with 168 three-pointers made and fifth in three-point attempts with 474. With 794 points scored, she is just 206 points away from becoming the 23rd player in Seahawk history to join the 1,000-point club.
A high school teammate of Archambault's at Montmorency, which plays in Quebec's most competitive girls basketball league, the ever-hustling Fournier is regarded as one of the NEC's top defensive players. The 5-9 guard has been a valued member of the Seahawk program throughout her 81-game career and is primed for a big senior season.
Robinson is beginning her fifth season of college basketball and second as a Seahawk, after transferring from to Wagner from Northeastern University in 2010. The 6-2 forward saw action in 26 games last season and tallied her first career double-double with a career-high 14 points to go with 10 rebounds vs. NJIT (11/19).
In Friday's three-point contest, defending champion junior
Laura Amorosa (Kirkland, Quebec / Phillips Academy (MA)), repeated as champion for a second-straight year, this time joining forces with
Jay Harris (Aurora, IL / Oswego East / Valparaiso), a junior on the Seahawk men's basketball team, in claiming the title in convincing fashion.
The other tandems that took part in the contest included Archambault & sophomore
Hugo Naurais (Nimes, France/ Elan Chalon), Fournier and junior
Latif Rivers (Elizabeth, NJ / Elizabeth / Avon Old Farms) as well as sophomore
Jacqui Thompson (Southampton, PA. St. Basil Academy) and freshman
Eric Fanning (Trenton, NJ / Perkiomen (PA) School).
Wagner opens the 2012-2013 campaign on Friday, November 9 by hosting Army in a 7:00 pm tilt.
