Brooklyn, NY – The Wagner College women's lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaking 12-11 game at Long Island University (LIU) as the Blackbirds scored two goals in the final 2:44 of the game to overcome an 11-10 deficit.
Both Wagner and LIU are now 3-10 on the season and 2-5 in Northeast Conference play.
This was a close game throughout as the biggest lead of the game was 2-0 in favor of LIU. The game was then tied nine times; at 3-3, 4-4, 5-5, 6-6, 7-7, 8-8, 9-9, 10-10 and 11-11.
The Seahawks were trailing 10-9 when sophomore midfielder
Carolyn Clark (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) scored an unassisted goal to tie the game at 10-10 with 5:20 left to play. Sophomore midfielder
Lauren Petrik (Syracuse, NY/Baldwinsville) then put the Seahawks on top 11-10 on a free position shot with 4:06 to play in the game.
LIU than tied the game at 11-11 on a free position shot by Jillian Maricondo with 2:44 to go. Annie Katala then sank the game-winner on another free position shot to make it 12-11 and the Blackbirds were able to hang on for the win.
The statistics also reflect how close this game was as Wagner out-shot LIU 30-29 while the Blackbirds led in ground balls 23-18 and in draw controls 13-11.

Teri Noll (Elbridge, NY/Jordan-Elbridge) added two goals apiece. Also scoring goals for the Seahawks were Petrik, junior attack

Annie O'Connor (Syracuse, NY/ Westhill), and sophomore midfielder
Melanie Garces (San Diego, CA/Westview).
Wagner is next in action on Friday, April 16 when the Seahawks host Mount St. Mary's in a 4:00 pm contest.
