Water Polo Weekend Preview

Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College Water Polo team (16-19, 6-4 MAAC) is the three-seed at this weekend's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship Tournament. On Saturday, the Seahawks will travel to Marist College to take on the second-seeded Iona College Gaels at 3:00 PM.

Wagner finished the season winners of four of their last six games – which included a 12-9 defeat of nationally ranked Marist College in the regular season finale. Marist is the top seeded team in the tournament with a 9-1 conference record, followed by Iona (8-2), Wagner (6-4), and Siena College (4-6).

The Seahawks sport a 37-24 (60.7%) lifetime combined record against the three programs – with a 12-14 mark against Saturday's opponent, Iona. Wagner finished 1-2 against the Gaels this season. Their one win came on February 28th at the ECAC Championships, 9-7. Since then, the Seahawks have come up short against Iona, 11-5 on April 10th and 13-12 on April 17th.

Defensive remains the strong point led by senior goalie Kelsey Rodgers (Anaheim Hills, CA/Canyon/Fullerton JC). Rodgers earned her fifth MAAC Defensive Player of Week honor on Tuesday, after leading the Seahawks to a 2-2 mark this past weekend. During that run, Rodgers matched a career-high with 22 saves in a 12-6 win over Siena and followed that up an 18-save performance in a 12-9 win over Marist on Sunday. She ended the year with 16 consecutive double-digit save performances.

Nationally, Rodgers remains on top of the standings with 472 saves – a mark she has held for four weeks. She also ranks first in save percentage (62.8%) among goalies with at least 800 minutes played. Rodgers helped the Seahawks to the second-best goals allowed per game average (9.03) in the Conference and her 13.88 saves per game average is the highest in MAAC history. In just two seasons, she ranks second the College's all-time saves list with 787 career stops.

The offense received a boost from sophomore Chelsea Beck (Reading, PA/Wilson), who posted 12 goals and two assists last weekend. Seven of those 12 goals came in a career-best performance against Marist to help the Seahawks clinch a postseason berth for the eighth straight season. Beck finished the year second in goals scored (54), third in assists (27), and tied for first in total points (81). She has scored in 15 of the last 16 games.

Action begins Saturday at 3:00 PM. Recaps will be available later that day. If the Seahawks win, they will face the winner of the Marist College / Siena College game at 2:00 PM on Sunday. If they lose, they will face the loser of Marist College / Siena College at 12:00 PM.
