Men’s Basketball Set to Close Road Swing at Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — The Wagner College men's basketball team will wrap up its 2025 road non-conference schedule on Tuesday with a matchup at Maryland. Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m. inside the XFINITY Center, with coverage on the Big Ten Network featuring Ed Cohen and Christy Winters-Scott on the call.

Tuesday's meeting marks the fourth all-time matchup between the programs, with Maryland holding a 3–0 advantage. The teams first met in 1980 at the Carrier Classic hosted by Syracuse and later played in 2003 and 2014, when the Terrapins earned an 82–48 win.

Maryland (5–3, 0–0 B1G) enters Tuesday's contest after playing three games in three days at the Players Era Tournament in Las Vegas, going 1–2 and most recently falling to No. 8 Alabama, 105–72. Under first-year head coach Buzz Williams, the Terrapins return just one player from last season. Maryland averages 77.3 points per game while shooting 41.1 percent from the field. Senior forward Pharrel Payne leads the team with 17.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.

Wagner (1–5, 0–0 NEC) concludes its seven-game road swing on the heels of its first win of the season, a 103–101 overtime victory at Manhattan. Junior Nick Jones delivered a career performance with 35 points on 11-of-17 shooting, adding six rebounds, six assists, two blocks, and a steal. Sophomore Zavier Fitch posted his first career double-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks, while graduate student Sam Smith added 14 points and six boards.

The Seahawks produced their strongest offensive outing of the season, shooting 58 percent from the floor and 56 percent (9-of-16) from three while scoring 54 points in the paint. Wagner also won the rebounding battle 42–31, received 32 bench points, and earned the first win for interim head coach Dwan McMillan.

Jones was named NEC Co-Player of the Week on December 1 after his 35/6/6 performance, becoming one of just four players nationwide this season to record at least 35 points, six rebounds, and six assists in a game. His 35 points are tied for the 19th-highest single-game scoring total in Division I this year and represent only the fourth 35/6/6 performance by an NEC player in the last 15 years. Fitch was also selected as an NEC Prime Performer following his first career double-double.

Following Tuesday's game, the Green & White will close out 2025 with four straight home contests, beginning December 6 against Bryant & Stratton–Albany at 1:00 p.m.
