San Marcos, TX - Texas State scored six runs in the second inning before holding off a late-charging Wagner squad in positing an 8-5 victory in the first game of a doubleheader at Bobcat Field.
The Bobcats improve to 8-2 while the Seahawks fall to 0-5.
After falling behind 6-0 in the top of the second inning, the Green & White got on the board in the top of the fourth with an unearned tally. Senior
Chris Smith (Tampa, FL / Ellsworth CC (IA)) reached via an error before coming around to score on junior
Jason Gordon's (Baltimore, MD / Archbishop Curley) RBI single to right field.
After allowing the Bobcats put a six-spot on the scoreboard, senior LHP
Matt Morris (Matawan, NJ / St. John Vianney) settled down and allowed just one more hit over his final three innings of work and left after 5.0 solid innings of work.
Wagner plated its second run of the game with another two-out strike in the top of the fifth inning. After scoring the first run of the game, Smith plated sophomore
Vaughn Champion (Galloway, NJ / Absegami) with a run-scoring single.
The Seahawks threatened to further dent the lead in the top of the sixth inning but left the bases loaded.
In the top of the seventh inning, Wagner again struck for a single run while cutting the Texas State lead to 6-3. Junior
Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe Township) led off with a double and would come around to score when senior
Shaun Flynn (Tabernacle, NJ / Burlington CC) laced a single up the middle.
The Bobcats added to the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth to stretch the lead out to 8-3.
Down to their final three outs, the Seahawks got those three runs back but were unable to get any closer in falling 8-5.
Freshman
Nick Mascelli (Clifton, NJ / Seton Hall Prep) reached base safely four times while Flynn went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Smith was 2-for-5 with two runs to pace the Green & White.
Austin O'Neil led the Texas State offense, going 2-for-4 with three RBI.
RHP Taylor Black (1-1) struck out seven while yielding two runs, one earned, on five hits over 5.0 innings in collecting the win while RHP Hunter Lemke got the final two outs for his third save of the season.
