San Luis Obispo, CA - No. 8 Cal Poly completed a three-game sweep against visiting Wagner by a 7-2 count in a tightly-contested affair at Baggett Stadium.

The Mustangs quelled a pair of bases loaded rallies by the Seahawks before putting the game out of reach with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Cal Poly improves to 17-3 with its seventh straight victory while Wagner fall to 2-11.

After falling behind 3-0 and managing just a Chris Smith (Sr., Tampa, FL / Ellsworth CC (IA)) single over the first three frames, the Seahawks broke through with a pair of runs in the fourth inning.

With one out, junior Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe Township) singled before senior Shaun Flynn (Tabernacle, NJ / Burlington CC) followed suit with a single of his own. Freshman Nick Mascelli (Clifton, NJ / Seton Hall Prep) then plated Dini while advancing Flynn to third with a RBI double down the right field line. Flynn then came around to score on junior Jason Gordon's (Baltimore, MD / Archbishop Curley) safety squeeze while trimming the deficit to 3-2. Wagner would have a chance to add to the scoring haul, but Mascelli would be tagged at the plate by the Mustang catcher for the third out of the inning.

In the sixth inning, the Seahawks were right back at it in loading the bases with one out on walks to Mascelli, Dini and Gordon while chasing Cal Poly starter freshman RHP Justin Calomeni from the game. Unfortunately, the Green & White would leave the bases loaded as reliever junior RHP Danny Zandona got the second out at the plate on a fielder's choice before retiring the next batter via the strikeout.

The Mustangs add to the lead with an unearned run in the bottom part of the frame before Wagner threatened again in the top of the eighth. Flynn and Mascelli led off with back-to-back singles before freshman Vaughn Champion (Galloway, NJ / Absegami) loaded the bases with two outs with a walk. However, the Seahawks were again unable to take advantage in leaving the base full for the second time in three innings.

Cal Poly then took advantage of a bases loaded situation in the bottom part of the frame as Jimmy Allen delivered a bases clearing, three-run triple to extend the lead out to 7-2.

Flynn went 3-for-5 with a run while Mascelli was 2-for-4 with a RBI double and a walk to lead a seven-hit Wagner attack. For the weekend, Mascelli reached base at a .538 clip with five hits, two walks and two RBI while hitting safely in all three games.

Sophomore LHP Paul Mammino (Hillsborough, NJ / Hillsborough) fell to 0-3 in defeat, allowing three runs with one strikeout over 4.0 innings. Freshmen righties Danny Marsh (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe Township) and Nolan Long (Waterford, CT / South Kent) combined for 3.0 solid innings out of the pen, scattering just one unearned run.

Allen went 3-for-4 with a triple and four RBI to highlight the top performers for Cal Poly while Calomeni (5-0) earned the win with five strikeouts over 5.1 innings of work.

Wagner returns to action on Friday, March 21 in the first of four games at No. 20 UC Santa Barbara with first pitch slated for 6:00 pm (EST).
