Virginia Tech Defeats Wagner In Non-Conference Action

Wagner capped its annual spring break trip with a 14-2 loss to ACC member Virginia Tech at English Field. In defeat, the Seahawks fall to 3-11 while the Hokies improve to 14-4.

The Green & White will now head home and host Quinnipiac at Richmond County Bank Ballpark in the conference opener for both teams on Friday, March 16 at 3:00 pm.

Virginia Tech scored in each of the first four innings en route to posting season-highs with 14 runs and 20 hits. Wagner, meanwhile, notched just two runs on four hits and four walks.

Leading the way for the Seahawks was sophomore Chris Smith (Tampa, FL / Freedom / Ellsworth (IA) CC)), who clouted his first career home run, a solo shot in the top of the third inning.

The Green & White plated its second run in the top of the eighth inning when sophomore Dave Pepe (Caldwell, NJ / James Caldwell), who singled earlier in the frame, scored on junior Nick Alfano's (Coral Springs, FL / North Broward Prep) RBI groundout.

Freshman RHP Connor Smith (Caldwell, NJ / James Caldwell) fell to 0-2 on the year, allowing seven runs over 2.0 innings. The freshmen trio of RHP Anthony Battaglia (Staten Island, NY / St. Joseph By The Sea), RHP Ryan Carmon (Belle Mead, NJ / Montgomery) and RHP Evon Previte (Raritan, NJ / Immaculata) pitched well in relief, combining to allow one earned run on three hits over the final 4.1 innings.

On offense, graduate student laced an eighth inning double to extending his hitting streak to six games and is batting a team-best .333 (9-27). Recording the only other hit for Wagner was freshman Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe Township), who singled in the fourth inning.

Pacing Virginia Tech was Chad Pinder, who went 4-for-5 with three RBI, two doubles and two runs. LHP Colin O'Keefe (2-0) earned the win, striking out six over 5.0 innings of one-run ball.
