Hawaii Defeats Wagner 2-0 In Game Two Pitchers' Duel

Box Score / Box Score (PDF)

Honolulu, HI –
Hawaii edged Wagner 2-0 in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader between the teams at Les Murakami Stadium, despite an outstanding performance from junior RHP Dakota Dvorak (Pompano Beach, FL / North Broward Prep). In defeat, the Seahawks fall to 0-4 on the year while the Rainbows improve to 5-3.

After serving as a reliever over his first two seasons on Grymes Hill, Dvorak struck out five while allowing just three hits over 5.0 innings in his first collegiate start. The Florida native, who was the tough-luck losing pitcher, allowed two runs, one earned, while walking two batters.

The Green & White offense could only manage four hits but did draw five walks, after notching just one over its first three games of the young season, but was unable to dent the scoring while stranding eight runners, including four in scoring position.

In the bottom of the second inning, Hawaii manufactured the first run of the game as Max Duval was hit by a pitch with one out, before eventually scoring on a RBI fielder's choice.

Dvorak would then settle down, retiring seven in a row before Stephen Ventimilia manufactured the second run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. After reaching via an infield single, the Rainbow second baseman swiped second before taking third on an errant throw down to the bag. Ventimilia would then come around to score on Breland Almadova's sacrifice fly.

Senior Eddie Brown (Edison, NJ / St. Joseph's (Metuchen) / Seton Hall) led off the sixth inning with a double before moving to third on the next play. Classmate Hayden Hunter (Santa Monica, CA / Notre Dame) and Jayson Keel (Starkville, MS / Starkville / Holmes Community College) loaded up the bases with consecutive walks. Unfortunately, freshman LHP Scott Squier, a 21st round draft pick of the Detroit Tigers last summer, left the bases loaded by inducing an inning-ending fly out.

Wagner would never seriously threaten again as freshman RHP Kyle Dowdy struck out three over 3.0 innings of two-hit ball in collecting his first career save.

Relieving Dvorak in the sixth inning was freshman Ryan Carmon (Belle Mead, NJ / Montgomery), who continued his outstanding collegiate start with 3.0 innings of one-hit ball while striking out three. Over his first two outings, he has struck out five while yielding just two hits and a walk over 5.0 scoreless frames.

Both teams recorded just four hits but Hawaii took advantage of three Wagner miscues in collecting the victory.

The teams will wrap up their five-game series with a single game tomorrow starting at 6:05 pm (EST), which will be televised live via Fox College Sports (FCS) Pacific.
