Game One vs. Radford
Game Two vs. Toledo
Clearwater, FL – An array of late runs helped Radford University (3-2) and Toledo University (7-1) knock off the Seahawks in their first two games of the 2011 season in the opening day of the University of South Florida Under Armour Invitational.
In Wagner's season opener, the Seahawks found themselves pinned up against the Highlanders of Radford out of the Big South Conference. Senior Lauren Williams led off the day reaching base on an error, then was advanced by her teammates all the way to home to give the Highlanders and early 1-0 lead.
Radford's freshman pitcher Stephanie Dameron gave up just two hits to the Seahawks in the first four innings, while her squad offensively put up two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to pull away with a 3-0 lead.
The Green and White kept the game within reach in the top of the fifth inning as senior
Hailey Corthell (Reno, NV) and freshman
Kristen Matteoni (Reno, NV) each knocked in a run to pull the Seahawks within one run with two innings left.
Both
Judy Betz (Ashburn, VA) and relief pitcher Jackie Jenkins threw hitless innings in the latter part of the game, giving the Highlanders their fifth win of the season, as the Seahawks dropped their opener, 3-2.
With little time for rest, the Seahawks took to the field against the Rockets of Toledo University. Freshman
Ashley Rollins (Fairfax, VA) entered the circle for Wagner, throwing four scoreless innings, and holding the Rockets to just five hits.
Two errors by the Green and White led to the games first run as Lindsey Tobias got the Rockets on the board, 1-0. The Seahawks tied the game up in the top of the fifth, as junior
Vanessa Lenart (Fontana, CA) led off the inning getting hit by Whitney Young's offering. After stealing second, Corthell singled to right-center field, knocking in Lenart and evening the score at one apiece.
The errors plagued Wagner again in the bottom of the fifth inning, committing three costly mistakes that prolonged Toledo's 11-batter inning, helping them put up six unearned runs on the Green and White, and pulling away with 7-1 lead.
Wagner started to get something going in the seventh as
Ashley Olsen (Staten Island, NY) made the most of her first at-bat of the game, singling to right field, before advancing on a
Brittany Huss (Anthem, AZ) single. With two outs, senior lefty
Christina Pinkus (Cohasset, MA) was feet away from making it a three-run game as she blasted a shot to deep right field, forcing Tobias to make a wall-crashing catch to end the game.
The Seahawks will head back to the Under Armour Invitational tomorrow, taking on Saint Joseph's at 10:00 am, before facing Bethune-Cookman at 3:00 pm.
