San Diego State Defeats Wagner 21-12 In Series Finale

San Diego State slugged its way past Wagner 21-12 in an offensive battle that featured 33 hits, 13 walks and 12 errors as the game took 3:48 to play under sunny skies at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The Aztecs completed the four-game sweep while improving to 21-20 as the Seahawks fall to 16-19.

Senior Vin Avella (Matawan, NJ / CBA) led a 13-hit Wagner attack, going 2-for-4 with a home run, double, three RBI and two runs while also drawing a pair of walks. Junior Brian Martutartus (Carlsbad, CA / La Costa Canyon) also had a big game at the plate, rapping out a team-best three hits in five trips to the plate while raising his average above .300 for the first time this season at .301.

Sophomore Tommy Higgins (Port Monmouth, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) (2-5; 2 RBI), junior Matt Logan (Wall, NJ / Wall) (2-5; 2 runs; doubles) and junior Kevin McDonnell (Bristol, CT / Avon Old Farms) (2-5; 2 RBI) also recorded multiple-hits for the Seahawks.

Also on offense, freshman Nick Alfano (Coral Springs, FL / North Broward Prep) recorded a RBI-single for his first collegiate hit while senior Damian Csakai (Freehold Township, NJ / Freehold Township) reached base safely four times (3 walks; 1 HBP) while scoring three runs and laying down a successful sacrifice bunt.

SDSU pounded out 20 hits as 10 different Aztecs hit safely, led by Jordan Van Hoosier, who went 3-for-5 with five RBI and three runs. Josh Chasse also had a big game, falling just a home run short of the cycle while going 3-for-4 with five runs.

Freshman Christian Rautenstrauch (Charlotte, NC / Providence Day) yielded five runs, three earned, over 2.0 innings in falling to 3-1.  Steven Moranda improved to 3-1 with the win, despite yielding four runs, two earned, over 1.2 innings.

Wagner hosts Iona on Wednesday, April 28 at 7:00 pm before heading to NEC co-leader Bryant for a four-game tilt next weekend.
