San Diego, CA - Addison Reed showed Wagner (16-16) why he is regarded as one of the top college pitching prospects in the nation, striking out a career-best 12 in a complete-game shutout while leading San Diego State (18-20) to a decisive 18-0 win in the first of four games at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
The Seahawks could only manage three singles against the hard-throwing Reed (6-1), who did not allow a walk and faced just two over the minimum while throwing 91 pitches, 71 strikes, in recording his first career complete-game shutout.
The Aztecs plated two runs in the second, three in the third and four in the fourth while jumping out to a 9-0 lead. SDSU put the game on ice in the bottom of the sixth, plating eight unearned runs while extending the lead out to an insurmountable 17-0 before adding another tally in the bottom of the eighth.
All nine regulars hit safely for the SDSU, which scored its 18 runs on 18 hits and 11 walks against Green & White pitching. Mitch Blackburn led the way, going 4-for-5 with a double, home run, five RBI and four runs.
Junior
Brian Martutartus (Carlsbad, CA / La Costa Canyon) got the first Wagner hit in the top of the third inning, but was erased trying to steal.
The Seahawks picked up hit number two in top of the seventh when
Tommy Higgins (So., Port Monmouth, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) stroked a single to right field. Unfortunately for the Green & White, Higgins was erased on the ensuing play on a line-drive double play.
Junior
Matt Logan (Wall, NJ / Wall) notched the third hit of the day for Wagner in the top of the ninth with a single through the right side.
Fifth-year senior
Matt Watson (Howell, NJ / Howell) (3-3) was the pitcher of record for Seahawks, allowing nine runs on seven hits with two strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work.
The teams resume their series tomorrow with a 4:00 pm (EST) doubleheader.
