Late Rally in the Sixth Lifts Wagner over Austin Peay, 5-4

Junior Emily Pierce
Clearwater, FL- The Wagner College softball team broke its nine-game losing streak this morning with a 5-4 win over Austin Peay University (AP) at the University of South Florida's Under Armor Invitational. With the win, the Seahawks improve to 1-9 on the season.

The Green & White jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an Austin Peay throwing error by Meagan Williams. In the top of the third, the Governors answered back, scoring on a Seahawk miscue.

After giving up a run in the top of the sixth, the Seahawks responded in the bottom of the frame with a four-run rally to take a 5-2 lead. Wagner's first pair of runs came off junior Amanda Garcia's (Fresno, CA / California State University, Fresno) double to right field, scoring freshman Terah DeBinder (Cypress, CA / Cypress) and senior Kate Eshelman (Reno, NV / McQueen). Using the momentum, junior Emily Pierce (Phoenix, AZ / Desert Vista) followed Garcia with a RBI single up the middle, scoring freshman Carley Nicoletti (Plainville, NY/ C.W. Baker), who pinch ran for senior Amanda deLancellotti (San Clemente, CA / Florida C.C. at Jacksonville). Freshman Brittany Huss (Anthem, AZ / Boulder Creek) capped off the decisive four-run inning with a RBI single to center field, scoring Garcia.

The Governors made its last attempt to rally back in the top of the seventh, notching two runs in the frame before DeBinder and the rest of the Seahawks defense retired Austin Peay's batters.

In the circle, DeBinder tossed the entire 7.0 innings of action while only allowing one earned run on four hits.

Wagner returns to action Tuesday, March 9 when the Seahawks travel to Kissimmee, FL to compete in the Rebel Spring Games. In day one of the games, the Green & White will face Loyola (Chicago) at 9:00AM and Penn at 11:00AM.
