Amanda Garcia (Fresno, CA / California State University, Fresno) in the first and a sacrifice fly by sophomore
Laura Hennig (Dyer IN / Munster HS) in the sixth highlighted a 3-1 win for the Wagner College softball team over Northeast Conference (NEC) rival Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) in game one of the doubleheader. The Green & White dropped the second game of the twin bill, 5-4, in 10 innings.
The Seahawk got off to a fast start in the first game of the contest, plating two runners on Garcia's double down the left field line. Scoring on the play were junior
Emily Pierce (Phoenix, AZ / Desert Vista) (reached on an error) and senior
Kate Eshelman (Reno, NV / McQueen) (reached by a double).
In the top of the sixth frame, the Seahawks tacked on an insurance run off sophomore Hennig's sacrifice fly, driving in Garcia, who reached on a single.
The Blue Devils managed to notch one run in the bottom of the seventh, scoring off a homerun to left field.
Freshman
Judy Betz (Ashburn, VA / Broad Run) pitched a complete game while allowing just one earned run off six hits. With the win, Betz moves to 2-7 on the season.
Wagner fell victim to a Blue Devil comeback in the nightcap. CCSU scored on a walkoff sacrifice fly to center field in the 10th to break the 4-4 tie.
The Green & White struck first in the third inning when Garcia laced a single up the middle, plating Pierce (walked). CCSU responded in the bottom half of the inning, scoring a run off a home run to left field.
With runners on first and second in the top of the third, Wagner took a two run advantage off a pair of RBI singles. Junior
Hailey Corthell (Reno, NV / Reno) drove in Garcia (reached on an error) on a single down the right field line before Hennig scored junior
Jamie El-Aazami (Houston, TX / Cypress Falls) (reached on a single) on a single through the left side.
CCSU tied the contest, 4-4, in the seventh, scoring on a Wagner miscue and a double to right center.
Both team battled back and forth for three innings until the Blue Devils took the win on a walkoff sacrifice fly to center field in the 10th.
In the circle, freshman
Terah DeBinder (Cypress, CA / Cypress) pitched for six and two-thirds innings of action while fanning two batters and allowing three earned runs. Betz hurled the remaining three innings, not allowing a single earned run.
Wagner (5-18, 1-1) returns to action tomorrow, March 28 when the Seahawk host NEC competitor Bryant University in a doubleheader at 12:00PM.
