Lucas’ 10 Strikeout Shutout Leads Wagner Over Long Island 2-0 In Game Two

Junior Jon Lucas notched a hit while striking out 10 on the mound
Staten Island, NY - Junior RHP Jon Lucas (Hackettstown, NJ / Hackettstown) struck out 10 while scattering four singles in leading Wagner (6-9; 3-0 NEC) to a 2-0 victory over Long Island (2-15; 0-3 NEC) in the second game of today's doubleheader at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.

Lucas (1-2), who retired 13-straight at one point, was the story of the second game. With runners at second-and-third and no outs in the top of the seventh inning, Lucas calmly struck out the side to give the Green & White the doubleheader sweep.

The Seahawks will look for their third-straight series sweep over the Blackbirds tomorrow at 1:00 pm.

For the third-straight game, Wagner dented the scoreboard in the first inning. Junior Jared Gruccio (Landisville, NJ / Buena Regional) walked on a full count. Lucas, who was also the designated hitter, followed with a single up the middle. Following a pop out, junior Kevin McDonnell (Bristol, CT / Avon Old Farms) scored Gruccio with a single to left field.

The Seahawks had a chance to add to the lead in the next inning, but grounded into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded.

LIU pitcher RHP Justin Topa settled down after that and faced the minimum over the next two frames before the Seahawks scraped out an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Junior Brian Martutartus (Carlsbad, CA / La Costa Canyon) led off with an infield single before advancing to second on a wild pitch. After moving over to third on a ground out, he scored on Gruccio's hard-hit groundout, providing the final 2-0 score.

The Blackbirds threatened in the top of the seventh as Sam Sciamarelli and Tyler Jones each singled before moving over to second-and-third on a wild pitch. Lucas then struck out Drew Walsh looking and Derek Stupski and Albert Faz swinging while giving the Green & White their fourth-straight win.

McDonnell went 2-for-3 with a RBI, pacing a six-hit attack. Jones led the way for LIU with two of the Blackbirds' four hits. Topa (1-3) took the loss, striking out three while allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over 6.0 solid innings.
