Mt. Pleasant, SC – The Wagner College softball team dropped another hard-fought contest to the James Madison University Dukes this afternoon. Today's 8-6 defeat comes on the heels of Wagner's 3-0 loss to JMU on Friday.
Wagner got out of the gates early as the Seahawks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when freshman
Krysta Fauria (Yorba Linda, CA / Valencia) scored on a sac fly by
Erin Cuevas (Westminster, CA / Huntington Beach). This lead was short lived as the Dukes responded in the bottom of the frame with two runs. JMU extended its lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the second inning after Olivia McPherson kept the Seahawks bats at bay in the top of the inning.
In the top of the fourth, Wagner put three runs on the board to tie up the game at 4-4. The Green & White's first run of the inning came via an error by the Dukes second baseman, scoring junior
Amanda Garcia (Fresno, CA / California State University, Fresno). With two runners on, sophomore
Vanessa Lenart (Fontana, CA / Henry J. Kaiser HS) tied up the game with a two-run single to right center.
This score would hold until JMU answered in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of runs. The Seahawks fired right back in the top of the sixth knotting the game at 6-6. The Seahawks two runs came on a Fauria RBI single.
Unfortunately, the Dukes would plate a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth frame, producing a lead that the Seahawks were unable to recover from.
At the plate, Fauria and Lenart lead the team with a pair of RBI each.
Sharing responsibilities in the circle were freshman
Judy Betz (Ashburn, VA / Broad Run), Garcia, and senior
Danielle Wagoner (Temecula, CA / Temecula Valley). Betz earned the start while allowing four runs through 2.0 innings of work. Garcia pitched for 3.1 innings of action, allowing the remaining four runs, while Wagoner finished the game for the Green & White.
Wagner returns to action Friday, March 5th when the Seahawks travel to Tampa, FL to compete in the three-day long University of Southern Florida Games.
