Kissimmee, FL.- The Wagner College softball team lost a pair of one-run games on the first day of the Seahawks' annual trip to the Rebel Spring Games, succumbing to the University of Maine, 6-5 and Southern Illinois University- Edwardsville, 8-7.
The Green & White, who will play a total of 14 games on their spring-break trip, are now 1-7 on the season.
In game one, Wagner jumped out to an early lead, plating five runs in the first inning. Sophomore
Hailey Corthell (Reno, NV / Reno) made it 1-0 Wagner with a RBI-single to center, driving in sophomore
Emily Pierce (Phoenix, AZ / Desert Vista). Senior
Jaclyn Vanore (Palisades Park, NJ / Paramus Catholic) extended the lead out to 2-0 with a RBI-double, scoring Corthell. Sophomore
Amanda Garcia (Fresno, CA / California State University, Fresno) capped the big frame, with a three-run home run to left center which also brought around Corthell and Vanore.
The Seahawks were able to hold off Maine up until the top of the fifth when the Black Bears clawed for four runs, three of which were unearned, off of Wagner starter
Kaelynn Armenta (Whittier, CA / Paul HS) to cut the deficit to 5-4.
Maine took the lead in the top of the seventh on Kristin Allen's two-run home run. Wagner was unable to answer in the home seventh.
In the circle, Armenta fell to 1-3 with the loss. The freshman hurler was the tough-luck loser, yielding just two earned runs while striking out three.
At the plate, Garcia led the Seahawks by going 1-2 with a home run and three RBI.
In the Seahawks' second game of the day, SIU-Edwardsville struck first with four runs in the first inning.
Wagner dented the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the second. Freshman Venessa Lenart (Reno, NV / Wooster) doubled to center field, scoring
Amanda deLancellotti (San Clemente, CA / Florida C.C. at Jacksonville) before senior
Cindy Bagnoli (Old Tappan, NJ / Old Tappan) capped the scoring with an infield hit, bringing around Lenart on the play.
In the top of the third, the Green & White scored three more times, taking a 5-4 lead. Vanore laced a two-run double to right-center, plating junior
Kate Eshelman (Reno, NV / McQueen) and senior
Andrea Lazzari (Reno, NV / Wooster). Garcia followed with a sac fly to right field, scoring Corthell to put the Seahawks ahead by one.
The Cougars tied the game up at 5-5 in the fourth with an unearned run.
SIU-Edwardsville reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs to take an insurmountable 8-5 lead.
The Seahawks refused to go down without a fight, scoring two runs in the seventh but was unable to get any closer in dropping their second-straight heartbreaker.
On the mound, Eshelman took the loss, allowing one earned run with one strikeout over 4.0 innings of work.
At the plate, deLancelotti and Vanore led the Green & White with two RBI each.
Wagner will face Yale (1:00 pm) and Wisconsin Green-Bay (5:00 pm) in day two of the Rebel games tomorrow.
