Tempe, AZ- After registering a stirring 1-0 season-opening victory over Penn State earlier in the day, the Wagner College softball team fell short against Texas Tech, by a score of 4-2 late this afternoon at the Arizona State Tournament. Wagner falls to 1-1 for the tournament while the Red Raiders move to 2-0.
Against the Red Raiders, Wagner struck quickly when senior
Andrea Lazzari's (Reno, NV/ Wooster) RBI single brought in junior
Kate Eshelman (Reno, NV/ McQueen) in the top of the first inning. In the top of the third, with runners on first and third, the Seahawks' extended their lead to 2-0 with senior
Jaclyn Vanore's (Palisades Park, NJ/ Paramus Catholic) sacrifice RBI to shortstop plating Eshelman for her second run of the game. This lead would be short- lived, however, as Texas Tech's bats came alive in the bottom of the third, notching four runs before Eshelman could retire the Red Raiders.
Both teams delivered strong defensive performances as neither team would score another run the rest of the way.
Eshelman turned in a solid six innings on the mound. The Reno, NV native recorded three strikeouts, while allowing seven hits, and four runs.
Lazzari led the Seahawks at the plate with one hit and an RBI. Vanore earned her first RBI of the season in her two at bats. Also recording hits for the Green & White were Eshelman, Amanda deLancelotti (San Clemente, CA/ Florida C.C at Jacksonville), and
Amanda Garcia (Fresno, CA/ California State University, Fresno), each with one.
In the field, Lazzari paced the Seahawks with six put outs followed by Garcia with five and
Jamie El-Aazami (Houston, TX/ Cypress Hill) with three.
Wagner returns to action on Saturday when the Seahawks open up with Western Michigan at 2:00 PM EST before facing the University of Califronaia-Santa Barbara (UCSB) in the nightcap at 7:00 PM EST.
