Wagner Softball Succumbs To Louisiana-Monroe, 10-0

Stats

Knoxville, TN - The Wagner College softball team was beaten this morning by the Warhawks of Louisiana-Monroe, their final match-up at the Tennessee Classic, 10-0 in five innings. The Seahawks now stand 0-4 overall on the fresh season while ULM moves to 6-7.

It looked like the Seahawks were going to get out of the box well in this game as they managed to lead off the game with three straight base hits from freshman centerfielder Emily Pierce (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista), sophomore pitcher Kate Eshelman (Reno, NV/McQueen), and senior shortstop Katie Stevens (Reno, NV/Wooster).

However, nothing would come of it as Pierce would get gunned out at home from rightfield on Stevens base knock, and after senior catcher Victoria Batistelli (Huntington Beach, CA/Huntington Beach) was hit by a pitch Eshelman was out on the force at home off a fielder's choice and junior infielder Andrea Lazzari (Reno, NV/Wooster) struck out swinging to end the inning.

Unfortunately for the Green & White the Warhawks would go on to tack on ten runs in the following five innings including a devastating third inning where they would produce five runs on five hits strictly on the heels of base hits and a lone sacrifice fly.

Wagner's final chance to avoid yet another five inning game came in their half of the fourth inning.

Once again they got off to a good start to the inning - reminiscent of the first - with both Lazzari and junior designated player Jaclyn Vanore (Palisades Park, NJ/Paramus Catholic) singling putting runners on first and second with nobody out.

But they just couldn't get them to reach the plate as the next three hitters were all retired by Warhawk pitcher Lindsay Rittenhouse, who along with teammate Jessica Wideman, managed to shut out the Seahawks on seven hits.

Eshelman (0-2) was tagged with the loss.

A silver-lining to the tough weekend in Knoxville was the naming of Katie Stevens to the All-Tournament team. The senior shortstop batted .333 with three hits on the weekend.

The Seahawks head back to Staten Island for a small break before packing up once again and heading down to Orlando, Florida for the Rebel Games on March 14.
