March 3, 2007

Box Score

Miami, FL - For the second-straight game the Florida International bats proved to be too much to overcome in Wagner's 14-2 loss at University Park Stadium. With the defeat the Seahawks fall to 0-2 while the Golden Panthers improve to 9-5.

FIU scored 14 runs on 16 hits, led by Kevin Mirabal who went 3-3 with two doubles and four RBI, while the Seahawk offense was limited to two runs on just five hits by five FIU pitchers.

The Golden Panthers struck first in the bottom of the first scoring four runs on four hits. The Green & White would get one of those back in the top of the second when sophomore Chris Drechsel's (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) one-out single through the left side plated junior Dan Morvay (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial), who reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning, while advancing freshman Kevin McDonnell (Briston, CT / Avon Old Farms) to second base. However the Green & White couldn't cut deeper into the FIU-lead as Jorge Ramos struck out the next two batters to quell the rally.

After trading zeros, FIU broke the game wide-open in the bottom of the third striking for five runs to make it 9-1. The Golden Panthers would score two more runs in the fourth and three in the sixth to go up by their largest margin at 14-1.

Wagner would score once more in the top of the eighth when freshman Damian Csakai (Freehold, NJ / Freehold) scored on a wild pitch.

McDonnell was 2-4 at the plate while Drechsel went 1-4 with an RBI to lead the Wagner-offense.

Freshman Kyle Morrison (Middlesex, NJ / Immaculata) started and lost, giving up nine runs in 3.0 innings of work in his collegiate debut. Sophomore Andrew Huebner (Hatfield, PA / North Penn) was extremely impressive in relief, striking out three in 2.0 scoreless innings of relief.

Ramos struck out four and gave up one earned run over 5.0 innings to improve to 2-2 on the season.

The Seahawks and the Golden Panthers wrap up their series tomorrow at 12 pm.
