March 10, 2007

Box Score

Clearwater, FL - The Seahawks softball team took a 3-2 loss from the University of North Carolina at the Adidas Invitational earlier this morning. Wagner (2-3) now moves on to bracket play at the tournament this afternoon. Game time and opponent have yet to be determined. The Tar Heels improved to 20-8 with their 11th straight win.

Wagner fell behind 2-0 in the top of the third as the Tar Heels scored a pair of unearned runs. A leadoff error helped set the stage for the scoring threat and a pair of RBI singles produced the first runs of the game.

The Seahawks came back in the bottom of the fifth after grad student Joy Gallagher (Hazleton, PA / Hazleton) starting the inning with a single up the middle. Senior Christina Hopkins (Edison, NJ / Edison) followed with a walk before freshmen Kate Eshelmen (Reno, NV / McQueen) moved the runners over with a well placed sacrifice bunt.

Junior Katie Stevens (Reno, NV / Wooster) then stepped up with the big hit, bouncing a single through the right hand side to even the score at 2-2. The inning continued as Wagner loaded the bases with two outs, but a sharp infield grounder end the threat.

North Carolina would take the 3-2 advantage in the next inning scoring another unearned run. A leadoff single and sacrifice put a runner on second with one out before a fly out to right set up the go ahead score. Higgins tagged from second and when the throw in from right bounced away from third, she came home for the 3-2 lead.

Hopkins (0-2) was the hard luck pitcher on the mound once again in taking the loss. After taking over for Eshelmen in the fourth she went the final 3.2 innings allowing just two hits and the unearned run. Eshelmen was solid as well giving up four hits and two unearned runs while recording two strikeouts.

Junior Ami Iwicki (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) broke up a no-hitter in the fourth with a double into right.

The Seahawks finish round robin play at 2-3 with a pair of one run losses. They start bracket play later in the afternoon.
