Box Score
BROOKLYN, NY - Wagner pounded out six first-inning runs and never looked back in cruising to an easy 10-2 win to sweep today's doubleheader with St. Francis (NY) at the Narrows Complex. With the win Wagner moves to 11-30 and 10-7 in the NEC while the Terriers fall to 3-31 and 0-17 in conference-play.
Sophomore lhp Joe Testa (Brick, NJ / Brick) improved to 4-4 on the season, striking out four and yielding just two runs in picking up his third complete game of the season.
The No. 1-No. 3 hitters set the pace for Wagner going 6-12 with four RBI, three runs and three doubles.
Wagner scored six first-inning runs and batted around on the strength of five hits, two walks and one crucial SFNY error. The Seahawks' last five runs of the inning were of the unearned variety as Wagner made the Terriers pay dearly.
The Seahawks' offense picked up right where it left off in the first game. Junior Matt Mastrianni (Ringoes, NJ / Hunterdon Central) doubled to right field with one out. Classmate Ed Sudol (Wallington, NJ / Wallington) followed with a double of his own to right field plating Mastrianni to put Wagner up 1-0. After a ground out, Sudol raced home when senior Joe Malfettano (Toms River, NJ / Toms River North) reached on an error by the shortstop to make it 2-0. Following a pair of walks freshman Chris Drechsel (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) singled to center field to drive in classmate Andrew Huebner (Hatfield, PA / North Penn) to extend the lead to 3-0. Freshman Pete Delleani (Manalapan, NJ / Manalapan) then cleared the bases when he laced a triple to right-center on a 0-2 pitch to put the Seahawks up 6-0 and by all accounts wrapping up the game for Wagner.
Wagner added one more run in the top of the second on a run-scoring double by Huebner and three more in the top of the third on a Joseph DiGeronimo (Jr., Hawthorne, NJ / Hawthorne) RBI-double and a two-run single off the bat of Mastrianni.
SFNY would manage just a pair of single runs in the bottom of the first and the bottom of the third off of Testa as they remained in winless in conference-play.
Brian Honeyman was the tough-luck loser for the Terriers falling to 1-4 on the season after yielding six runs, five unearned, in 1.0 inning of work.
DiGeronimo, Mastrianni and Sudol each went 2-4 with a double to lead the way for Wagner offensively.
The two teams will meet for the final time ever tomorrow with a noon tilt as SFNY is dropping baseball as a scholarship sport after this season.
