BROOKLYN, NY - Using an old-fashioned mix of strong starting pitching and timely hitting the Wagner College Seahawks took the first game of their Northeast Conference (NEC) doubleheader with St. Francis (NY) by a score of 4-3 earlier this afternoon at the Narrows Athletic Complex. With the win the Green & White improve to 10-30 and 9-7 in the NEC while SFNY drops to 3-30 and 0-16 in the NEC.
Redshirt-junior rhp Andrew Bailey (Haddon Heights, NJ / Paul VI) struck out eight while yielding three runs on three hits to improve to 1-0 on the season with the complete-game performance. Bailey cruised through the first six innings, facing just one batter over the minimum, including striking out the side in the bottom of the third.
The freshmen duo of Chris Drechsel (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) and Mike Maffucci (Nutley, NJ / Nutley) went 4-6 at the plate with three RBI to lead the Green & White on offense.
Senior catcher Mike Picarello (Clifton, NJ / Clifton) got the Seahawks on the board in the top of the third when he blasted his second home run of the season to left field to make it 1-0.
Wagner added three runs in the top of the sixth as Drechsel singled to bring in fellow frosh Andrew Huebner (Hatfield, PA / North Penn), who had singled with one out. Maffucci then followed with a triple to right center, plating Drechsel and senior Joe Malfettano (Toms River, NJ / Toms River North) to give Wagner an insurmountable 4-0 lead.
SFNY would rally in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Terriers loaded the bases with no outs and managed to score three runs before Bailey closed the door on the Terriers with a three-pitch strikeout.
