HARRISONBURG, VA - A day after getting dominated by the James Madison bats, the Wagner Seahawks were shut down by the pitching of Ryan Reid in an 11-1 loss to the Dukes. In 7.0 innings of work, Ryan struck out 12 while yielding only two hits and facing one batter over the minimum in leading the Dukes to a three-game series sweep of the Green & White.
With the loss the Seahawks fall to 0-3 on the season while the Dukes won their seventh-straight game to improve to 7-4.
James Madison's bats picked up where they left off in yesterday's doubleheader sweep when Davis Stoneburner hit a leadoff home run to put James Madison up 1-0. In the third, Matt Bristow led off the inning with a solo shot of his own to make it 2-0. Nate Schill then hit a two-run blast in the bottom of the fourth to give the Dukes a 4-0 lead. In the sixth inning, the Dukes plated a pair or runs to make it 6-0 as they cruised to an 11-1 victory.
Reid retired the first seven Seahawks he faced before senior catcher Michael Picarello (Clifton, NJ / Clifton) doubled with one out in the third. However, freshman left fielder Chris Drechsel (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) would then ground into the rare 5-3-5 double play to end the threat. Reid then set down the next eight Seahawks in a row before Drechsel singled with two outs in the top of the sixth.
The Seahawks would get on the board in the bottom of the eighth when a two-out Picarello single plated sophomore designated hitter Dan Morvay (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial), who had doubled before advancing to third.
Despite picking up the loss, freshman rhp Andrew Huebner (Hatfield, PA / North Penn) looked good for the Seahawks his collegiate pitching-debut, giving up six runs in 6.0 solid innings while striking out six batters against only one walk.
Picarello led Wagner offense going 2-3 with a double and an RBI.
The Seahawks are next in action when they start their eight-game Southern swing at UCF on Saturday, March 11 at 6:30 pm in the first game of a three-game set with the Knights.
