JACKSONVILLE, FL - The Wagner College Seahawks dropped their seventh-straight game to open the season to Jacksonville by a count of 7-2 earlier this evening at Brest Field. With the win the Dolphins improve to 17-4 on the season.
The Seahawks struck first, jumping out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second when senior second baseman Joseph Malfettano (Toms River, NJ / Toms River North) walked with the bases loaded forcing in sophomore designated hitter Dan Morvay (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial), who had singled earlier in the inning. However the Seahawks could only muster one run out of the bases-loaded situation as junior shortstop Joseph DiGeronimo (Hawthorne, NJ / Hawthorne) went down looking following Malfettano's walk.
Wagner's lead would short-lived as the Dolphins answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning and two more in the bottom of the third to go up 4-1. Jacksonville added two more in the bottom of the sixth and one in the bottom of the seventh to make it 7-1. The Seahawks would get one of those runs in the top of the eighth when freshman third baseman Pete Delleani's (Manalapan, NJ / CBA) first collegiate hit to left field scored Morvay, who had reached earlier in the inning on a walk.
Senior catcher Michael Picarello (Clifton, NJ / Clifton) went 2-4 at the plate while Morvay was 1-2 with two runs and two walks to lead the Seahawk-offense.
Also singling for the Seahawks were Malfettano, senior center fielder Nick Papa (Freehold, NJ / Freehold) and senior right fielder Brian Scrocca (Somerville, NJ / Somerville).
Junior rhp Matt Mastrianni (Ringoes, NJ / Hunterdon Central) was the pitcher of record for the Green & White giving up six runs in 5.0 innings. He is now 0-1 on the season.
Freshman rhp Sean Flanagan (Manalapan, NJ / Manalapan), senior lhp Neil Hoosier (Pomona, NY / Ramapo) and freshman rhp Kevin Rush (Metuchen, NJ / Metuchen) combined to shut down the Dolphins after Mastrianni left striking out two while allowing only an unearned run in 3.0 innings of relief.
The Seahawks complete their two-game series with the Dolphins tomorrow, March 15 at 12 pm.
