Feb. 25, 2006

Box Score

San Diego, CA - The Wagner softball team opened the 2006 season with a pair of losses on Day 1 of the Aztec Invitational at the SDSU Softball Complex. The Seahawks fell twice by finals of 8-0 to Western Kentucky and the host San Diego State University.

Freshman Andrea Lazzari (Reno, NV / Wooster) made her collegiate debut with a pair of hits on the day. Junior Christina Hopkins (Edison, NJ / Edison) also had two hits going 2-3 on the day while senior Gia Grimaldi (Hauppauge, NY / Hauppauge) added a single in each contest as well.

In the opener vs WKU junior pitcher Morgan Miller (Las Vegas, NV / Silverado) (0-1) sent the opposition down in order in the top of the first and retired six of the first seven batters faced. The Sehawks would threaten in the bottom of the first after Natalie Stephens (Jackson, NJ / Jackson) led off the inning with a single past second. She would be pushed to second on a sacrifice bunt, but left stranded there.

The Big Red then scored first with a two run homer in the third innings and then sealed the victory with a six run fourth to implement the eight run mercy rule. Wagner would place runners on first and second again in the second, third and fifth innings, but were unable to get the big hit need to send the runners home.

In the night cap San Diego State used a three run homer to power a four-run top of the first. The Aztec would then dent the scoreboard with another run in the second before putting three more on in the third, including a two run homer.

Wagner's best scoring opportunity came in the third inning when one out singles from Hopkins and Grimaldi were followed by a walk to Stephens to load the bases. The rally would die there however as a double play ended the frame.

Junior Dara Gadziala (East Brunswick, NJ / East Brunswick) (0-1) was identified with the loss.

The Seahawks continue play on Saturday at 2:15 pm and 9:00 pm Eastern Time.
