Ray Doody (1947-1951) was a sensational guard for four years who helped lead the Seahawks to 65 victories over his career. At the time of his graduation, his 921 career points were a school-record. Following the 1950-1951 season, he was selected as a First-Team All-Star by the Greater New York Collegiate Conference.
A shooting guard during his first three seasons on Grymes Hill, the unselfish Doody switched to point guard his senior season. At his new position, the 5-10 Doody led the team in assists and was voted Team MVP by his teammates. Thanks in large measure to Doody's stellar play and the tutelage of Wagner Hall of Fame head coach Herb Sutter, the Seahawks recorded a 19-5 record in 1949-50 followed by an 18-7 mark in 1950-51.
An excerpt from Staten Island Advance columnist Hal J. Squier described Doody as follows: "If there is a player that is on the borderline of indispensable, such a player was Ray Doody during his entire four years with the Seahawks...While Doody was in the game, Coach Sutter could be at ease, knowing that he had a player on the floor, who would carry out the assignments that had been rehearsed in the practice sessions. A coach's dream."
