R. Neill Johnston (1959-1962) was one of the truly outstanding running backs in Wagner College history. An elusive halfback, Johnston was a key player in the Seahawk’s march to an undefeated season in 1960. A big-play back, he could break a long run at any time. As was a trademark of the era, he played on both sides of the ball and was known for his jarring hits in the defensive secondary.

Johnston also excelled in track and field where he was the Middle Atlantic Conference Champion in the javelin four-straight years and still holds the Wagner record with a throw of 212’0”. Johnston’s success was not limited to those two sports as he also participated on the baseball and wrestling teams.
