Paul Nuzzolese stood out as one of the best players of the 1950s and is considered one of the best linemen in the history of the Wagner football program. Nuzzolese also left his mark on the baseball diamond, playing first base and seeing time in the outfield. After attending a tryout with the Brooklyn Dodgers of the National League at Ebbets Field.
Nuzzolese enrolled at Wagner the week after the first football game of the 1955 season. Three weeks later, he returned to the football field, starting on the offensive line at the guard position. He was a constant staple of the Seahawks’ offensive and defensive line, while also seeing time on special teams.
A tenacious player, Nuzzolese did not miss a game for the rest of his tenure on Grymes Hill. In 1958, he was selected to participate in the All-East All-Star game as an offensive lineman. He was part of the squad that featured Division I All-Americans such as Joe Trinciri, Bill “Lonesome End” Carpenter, and Pete Dawkins, who went on to win the 1958 Heisman Trophy.
In the spring, he returned to the ballpark, where he became a three-time All-Metropolitan Conference selection (1957, 1958, and 1959). In 1960, he was batting .450 when an injury put an end to his season.
