Lawrence "Spanky" Sweeney

Larry “Spanky” Sweeney played forward and point guard on the basketball team from 1948-52 under Wagner Hall of Fame coach Herb Sutter, helping the Seahawks to a 68-31 record. As a sophomore, the late Sweeney helped lead Green & White to a 19-5 record, winning the Greater New York City (GNYC) Championship along the way while posting a then-school record nine-game win streak. He also set a then school-record with 26 points in a game and finished third in the nation by shooting 48 percent from the floor. Sweeney was named Second Team All-Metro as a junior and earned First Team recognition as a senior while being named to the NYC All-Star team during his final season at Wagner. For his career, he scored over 900 points. He retired in 1996 after working 26 years for the Telecommunications Broadcast Music Incorporated, highlighted by being named was named Broadcaster of the Year by the NYS Broadcasters in 1996. Survived by his wife Lauretta they had five children.
