John Chaney (1984-1987) was one of the finest all-around athletes in Wagner history. A dynamic multi-dimensional two-way player, the 6-2, 180-pound Chaney was extremely versatile, excelling as a defensive back, wide receiver, kickoff returner and punt returner as well as on coverage teams.
In one game during his junior season, he recorded seven tackles on special teams. Chaney, a native and resident of Albany, NY, was a key component in Wagner’s historic 1987 season and made a host of big plays for a 13-1 team that captured the Division III National Championship. In 1985, his sophomore season, he averaged a team-best 17.3 yards per reception. He played on teams that compiled a combined record of 37-9 (1984-87), including a 22-3 mark during his junior and senior seasons.
Chaney was also a walk-on with the men’s basketball team and a member of the track & field team. Following his Wagner career, he was a free agent signee of the New York Giants.
